Feeler - T60 DVDRW

#1 Post by ZaZ » Wed May 28, 2008 5:22 am

Just was wondering what a DVDRW drive is going to cost me? I don't care if it's new or used. Just so long as it's in reasonable shape and works. I have the chance to buy a T60 with the IPS screen at a very reasonable price, but it only has a combo drive and I'd like the DVD Burner. I'd like to figure out how much a used one is going to cost me so I can factor that in before I decide whether to buy.

.. if you see the thread Swapping T60 Multiburner w/ T42 DVD/CDRW you will find that you will need a 40Y8623 (or as FRU: 39T2677). Searching eBay for these, I just found the latter (refurbished) offered for $125. Maybe you can find one on an auction for somewhat less, but I would guess you may end around the 100-mark. If you buy a new one directly from IBM (as an original spare part), that is going to cost you around three times as much!

You should be able to get one around $60-70...now go snatch that FlexView before the owner changes his/hers mind... :D

If you seen one, please send it my way. I emailed the seller for the serial number and machine type so I can make sure the two years of warranty it's supposed to have is there.

A slightly older (and slower) CD/DVD-RW also claimed usable in T60's is the P/N 73P3342 (FRU = 39T2507), see e.g. this eBay auction and see the data at ThinkPad Multi-Burner Plus Ultrabay Slim drive - Service parts (follow the links therein). There are many cheap 73P3342/39T2507),'s around - search for yourself!

The fastest DVD-RW for T60's I believe is the one mentioned in my previous post - also see CD & DVD drive accessories - ThinkPad T60, T60p standard screen. Also, watch out for 41N5643 - see ThinkPad Ultrabay Slim DVD Burner and ThinkPad DVD Ultrabay Slim Burner - Overview. Compare read/write formats, and speeds to see if that one is perhaps even faster?

Thanks for looking. There's a few of the 73P3342 on there in the $55-60 range. I may just go that route if I get one. If I can get the 8x for a few bucks more, that'd be nice, but I mostly burn on my desktop when I do. I do occasionally burn a disc, so having the option would be nice. I'm just waiting to hear back from the seller with the serial and machine type so I can verify the warranty.
