Thinkpad agn card to replace Intel 4965
Thinkpad agn card to replace Intel 4965
My original X61s came with Intel 4965 AGN, which isn't able to connect at speeds greater than 130 at 2.4.
I am curious if it's possible to retrofit Thinkpad AGN card that was once offered for other models of thinkpad. It says mini PCI so I don't see why it wouldn't work with proper drivers.
Then again, I am reading that may be the bios won't let you use other than Intel agn card and that Thinkpad AGN may produce too much heat...
Any thoughts?
Thank you

just so you know. All N cards once updated with later drivers and routers with later firmwares will all be at 130Mbps at the 2.4Ghz bandwidth. It's not a limitation of the Intel card, but a specification of the N standard. Any device that's N capable will have to adhere to this standard and that includes the Atheros ones too.
The Thinkpad AGN though should work with the x61 though because it was an option i think.

I swapped the Thinkpad (Atheros) ABN card into my X61 for awhile. It is a tiny bit hotter (the Intel card is already pretty hot) and uses up battery a tiny bit faster. I changed it back for the slight improvement but wouldn't mind using either.

sbkim: I forgot to mention this, but the Atheros has a way better signal. I don't have any N networks to connect to, but every location I've tried I can see more networks and have a more reliable connection with the Atheros over the Intel. Just chose the Intel for now because it works "well enough" in the locations I need it to and the battery usage is more predictable.
