X4x SD card reader questions

#1 Post by skijon » Thu May 29, 2008 9:46 am

With the price dropping on the sandisk 8gb extream III sd cards ($40 on ebay) I am thinking about buying one and using it as an extension to my 33gb hdd. can the x40 (1.2ghz, 1.25gb ram) sd reader keep up with this card?

I have read that the 4200rpm 1.8" hdd can only read/write 30MB/s, and the card is published to read/write at 20MB/s how noticeable will the difference be? Will the SD card give me the almost 0 seek time found on a SSD?

finally will using the SD reader significantly affect the battery life? is an external usb hdd a better way to go?

any incite is appreciated,
Jon

Hi !

I own a X41 and have recently bought a 16 GB SD card for it. As it is an SDHC card, you need a microsoft update for the reader to recognize the card, but then it works fine.

Keep in mind, that the speed is not limited by the card, but by the internal card reader. You only can write with a speed of about 3-4 MB/s, so you are far away from HD or SSD speeds.

However, it is a nice and compact extension for the small harddisk, but if you need the speed and capacity, you should better buy an external hard drive.

i copy the speed issues...my microSDHC from a-data writes 10 times faster through usb reader(12MB/s write) included than through SD adapter in x41t reader (800-1250kb/s). Maybe x61t sd reader would be faster..?
