X series have the CPU soldered directly to the motherboard. You cannot upgrade your CPU without changing the motherboard. You could get a motherboard with a 700 MHz CPU, but that is the extent of possible upgrades.
X220/IPS, T60p/IPS
Nothing endures but change

so..what can i upgrade on my X21? only memory and hd?
can i put wireless miniPCI or it's better that i use the miniPCI slot to upgrade with a modem/lan combo card? i just saw this one: 3 COM MODEL 3CN3AC1556 MIMI PCI COMBO CARD FOR LAPTOPS 10-100 LAN AND 56K MODEM 2 IN 1
it's good for x21? the seller says that is compatible with tp T series (see http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... :IT&ih=013 )
but then where i can find the drivers?
thankyou all

I just got an X22 for my assistant. With a fresh IBM recovery install updated to WXPSP3 (mine was one of those with XPP OEM, as there are also other versions with W2K and W98SE OEM) it was dog slow compared with my T30 and T43.

I know the PIIIM-800 is a slower processor, but I needed it to surf the web and do general office productivity responsively. The ATI Radeon is not the problem. It is fast enough, that why you can move windows around even if Windows is stuck.

So I researched and tweaked it using guides I found on the Internet.

In summary, here's what I did:

In the BIOS, shut off all ports you don't need: Parallel Port, Serial Port, modem (unless you need any of those).

In Windows, follow these guides:

http://www.connectedinternet.co.uk/2005 ... indows-xp/
http://www.connectedinternet.co.uk/2005 ... p-windows/

The biggest speed boosts I got was by

-turning off the monitoring processes using this:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... 3193604ba4
-installing Intel's INF driver for the X22s chipset (INF utility for mobile 800 chipsets)
-installing Intel's Application Accelerator

I also downloaded BootVis to optimize my boot process

You can also try these NTFS tweaks:
http://www.connectedinternet.co.uk/2006 ... nce-hacks/

All these tweaks are free.

End result was that the X22 is as responsive as the T30 when surfing and switching applications. Unlike the T30 it is much smaller and lighter. Battery life is an amazing 2 hours with an old battery.

Of course, the slower processor is apparent in processor intensive tasks (video encoding, etc.), but web surfing, office productivity, etc. is fast and speedy.

Now, if you want to spend some money...

max out the RAM to 640MB (replace the single module with a 512MB module)
get a fast hard drive (5400 or 7200), but be sure to check power consumption and heat output (most drives made in the last year should be okay).
Put a microdrive in the CF slot and place your swap file there.[/url]

In my opinion, the easiest way to upgrade it is to buy a X24. They usually go for less than $200 these days. For $100-150 more you could get an X31 which is still a reasonably contemporary notebook. Spending a couple of hundred bucks trying to upgrade the X21 is not a very sensible thing to do. If you love it it may be worth a bigger harddrive, more ram, and a new battery. If it needs more than that it is going to be cheaper, not to mention easier, to just buy a newer model.

MACESS,
thankyou for your help but my X21 is not a X22; different processor, different screen (800x600),different video card, different mother board, max memory 384mb, no cdc slot, no wifi option.
in any case maybe i'll try your software suggest...i'll try to replace the win 2000 with th xp and i'll see what happensevan if i'm not optimist abot this solution for reason why i have less memory than xp requires
thankyou all
