How to fix MBR for Pre-desktop Vista Bus 32?

#1 Post by dfumento » Thu May 29, 2008 9:42 pm

I was trying to do a dual boot system and it overwrote the Master Boot Record for the pre-desktop area (i.e. I don't get F11 Rescue and Restore option). What do I do to fix this? I think I heard about a program to fix this. Do you know where to find it? TIA

It shows XP/2000 and Vista is below them.

For dual boot, I usually remove the partition after making the recovery CD's. Then use the extra space for the OS's. I'm not sure if I've read of anyone keeping a working recovery partition with a dual boot setup.

I followed the instructions in the link and it doesn't work.
It has the title: Thinkvantage Technology Master Boot Record Repair Program.
It then has some text and has one line that says Press ENTER to make the repair. I press ENTER and the DVD light goes on but the screen does not change. I reboot and the MBR is not fixed. TIA

Have you followed all the steps and got to the "The operation was completed successfully" screen?

Also, have you noticed the warning:

Note: Install the Rescue and Recovery software, before restoring the partition.

Thanks...I was later able to get it to write the MBR by pressing "f" multiple times as was suggested in your original post and it did overwrite it so I could get the R&R functions. However, my original problem was that I tried to install Win Server 2008 as a dual boot and I was unable to reach my original Vista Bus 32 install. I did the MBR repair but still unable to reach the Vista Bus 32 install. Any ideas? TIA.
