New T42 DVD/CD Drive Door Access

#1 Post by banix88 » Wed Dec 15, 2004 10:48 am

Firstly, i just received my new thinkpad 2379-R9U... Great machine... no problems so far... no dead pixels (which i seem to hear so much about on message boards)... its a bundle of joy...

Secondly, to my main question... i am not sure if it is just me, but what is the correct way to open the CD/DVD drive... maybe i am missing something there or have a defective drive... i press the little blue button on the side, and the drive door opens... i then put in the CD and close the drive... to open it, i am assuming that i have to press that button again to open it... however, sometimes it just does not work ... i thought that regardless of whatever software process is running, since it is a mechanical latch, the drive door should open... i am having instances where if there is a CD already inside, sometimes it will not open... any comments or observations are greatly appreciated...

Thats not necessarely true, I haven't yet tried on my T42 but I remember on my other laptop if a program is running or you're in the middle of a software install the drive door will not open in the middle of it. The light will blink but it won't open until you stop the program.
I also have a 2379R9U, it's a great machine with a great configuration and a stunning display. Enjoy it!

Same thing happened to me. IBM shipped me a whole new CD/DVD multiburner unit to swap out. So far it is acting better.... but I am hesitant to say it has 100% fixed the problem...

I am experience this problem with the T42 and the Matshita UJDA755 DVD/CDRW. I called IBM the first time it happened and will call again for, perhaps a replacement. I did the firmware update. If it gets stuck & I power down & back up again then it will open. Thought I'd add a note here in case other people experience this, too. Can get back with an update.

I had the same problem on my T42P....initially I downloaded a utility from IBM to help with the errant DVD not always opening up...that worked for awhile...they finally replaced my DVD drive and it is opening perfectly.

The blue button is not a mechanical opener - it's electronic. The mechanical opener is the paperclip hole.

Yeah, I know this. It's a situation where the drive will open electronically the first time (& maybe second) but it won't open again (electronically) after using it, to extract the CD.

Update: called support & they are sending another DVD/CD drive. Unless the new one's flaky, then it's a resolution.

Go into My Computer and right click on the DVD/CD Icon and slect "eject" from the menu. This will open the drawer of your drive. I do this all of the time instead of touching the faceplate of my DVD/CDroms on my Thinkpads, as even with WinXP, I have put a My Computer Icon on my desktop.

Hi All,

Me too! I am having exactly the same problem. The blue button is very erratic.

What utility should I downlaod and install from IBm that will clear this problem? Is this a mechanical or electrical failure?

If the drive door opens and I place a CD everything is fine, but when it does not open, I have to always shut down and reboot.

Cheers,
Ranjit
