A20m freezes prior to Windows loading

I have owned a Thinkpad A20m for about a year. OS is Windows XP pro. The computer has worked alright until this week when the cursor began to freeze. It will turn on until the windows screen appears but after that its all down hill. Can anyone help??

Turned out to be PCI Adapter card after much trial and error.
Replaced with PCMCIA plug-in and all works fine.
Thanks to all who looked at the problem and I hope that my solution may assist someone else.
