Migrating RAM and DVD-RW drive from T30 to another Thinkpad?
I'm considering replacing my T30 with a higher-powered Thinkpad. What's the highest upgrade I'll be able to find that will still be able to use the optical drive and RAM from a T30?

In terms of the T-series, probably none. The T4x onwards uses a slimmer Ultrabay, so the optical drive would not fit, and while the RAM is physically compatible, and might work in a T4x, it is rated at a slightly lower speed than T4x standard RAM (DDR-2100 as opposed to DDR-2700) which may result in either the lower speed or incompatibility. Why the question? These are not really the expensive parts of a laptop.

I feel a degree of sympathy with you on this point Jadmire. You want to move on up but you still don't want to part with those valuable additions you've made over the months.
Put a feeler post in the Marketplace Forum and see if the buyers are biting on good T30's. You never know... you might get a PM from someone who'll make the whole argument...a lot simpler.

The way I see it...sell your T30 as parts unit, you'll get more money out of it.
Sell RAM and DVDRW separately, and then the base machine with like 256Mb RAM and no media drive, or a CD or something.
Parts are even cheaper when you start going towards the high-end T4x and T6x series, especially RAM. You should be able to do OK if you have realistic expectations and play your cards right...
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
