X31 and Tensor fingerprint reader

#1 Post by hkhalil » Wed Dec 15, 2004 4:47 pm

I have had my new X31 for just under a month and so far I think it's great.

I wanted to use the security chip with a fingerprint reader so I got one of the PCMCIA readers from www.tensor.co.uk IBM reccomend the Targus Defcon reader, but I couldn't find one for less than £250 which is a bit too much for me.

I installed the Client Security software first, then once that was in i installed the drivers and software for the reader. It all seems to be working fine.

I have just ordered the Bluetooth upgrade. I'm not sure if my particular flavour of X31 supports it, but I'm gonna try it anyway and let you know how I got on. It will take +4 weeks for delivery though!

I wonder if my "older" model X31 will support the finger print reader? Mine is one year old.

Read The Admin Guide 1st

I don't see why not it's just a plug-and-play device.

Whatever you do, read the administrator and setup gudes from the IBM website first. There are a few things that you should be aware of before you install - like what you can and can't do once you enable the security subsytem. For example, unless you choose the advanced setup mode - you won't have the option of overiding the biometric log-on with password only.

My only critisism so far is that the policy for security is the same for all users. You can't specify one set of rules for administrators and another for users. It would be nice if an administrator could log-on without fingerprint (for hardware troubleshooting etc..). Also; I think that if you start up Windows in Safe Mode - you can bypass the biometrics if you know the password... Not so secure afterall.
