T61 with the Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7910A - DVD Region Unlock

Do I / we need to unlock / Region Free this DVD Drive? Is there firmware for it?

PS: I already know of the software solutions: AnyDVD, DVD Region Free etc.
T61 8892-02U: 14.1"SXGA+/2.2C2D/4G/XP|Adv Mini Dock|30" Gateway XHD3000 WQXGA via Dual-link DVI

Firmware hacks to remove region coding are pretty much passe now as there are software programs that can do this on the fly (as you say). There are freeware ones also.

I think it's even legal in most instances to change a DVD player's region - up to five times maximum. It would be very poor if laptops sold internationally did not have this capability.

Recommend some please. I know VLC Player, AnyDVD. Others?

There were hacks that allowed u beyond the 5 time region change. i.e. Regionless.
