looking to purchase an x61/s, just a few questions

I was wondering if someone could link a desktop picture of their x61 (perhaps with a small internet browser open). Since it's a XGA, I have heard complaints about the resolution being too big for work?

I understand that x61s is brighter, but since I will mostly use x61 indoor setting do I need x61s? Were there any issues on screen brightness for x61 users?

I have no problems at all working on the X60, but that's because I have most of the fonts set to ten-point size. Here's a screenshot:

Ubuntu 7.10, running the GNOME gui.

There's a Thinkpad-specific version of Linux (I believe SUSE-based) that's supposed to work much better.

I just received my new X61 after having a T61 SXGA+ for over a month... I prefer the X61 for numerous reasons. First was the screen size and the display. XGA is nothing to sneeze at. Truly. Everything displays very nicely and I find the screen brightness and quality to be even better than what I had on the T61!! It's bright enough without the need for an "ultrabright" screen of the X61s - unless you'll be working outdoors in bright conditions or something.

I'd also suggest the X61 over the X61s because of the extra power in the NV processors available on the X61. The "s" uses a low-voltage processor and is slower, so depending on the type of work you do, it may not be enough for you. I do lots of compiling and my X61 with T7500 (2.2GHz) is plenty enough to do lots of multitasking without any hiccups whatsoever. Oddly enough - it doesn't even get as "hot" as some may suspect - it runs very smoothly and very cool as well.

The resolution isn't too big for work either for me. I fit a full window of Office perfectly well, makes it easier to concentrate on the work. If you really need a ton of windows open - depending on the type of work you do - but you just love the form factor of the X series, then I'd suggest you wait for the next-gen X-series systems, as those will be widescreen.

If I had a choice for a new machine - I'd pick the X61 over any other type without giving it a second thought.

I should buy one now since I've been hearing that the price of next x-series will likely to start at least several hundreds USD above the current x61/s sale's.

Just wondering, how much RAM do you have? and does adding 1 gig Turbo Memory help?

I've got the 7675-92U pre-configured machine. Came with the 8cell battery, 2.2GHz (T7500), 1GB RAM, Intel 4965AGN (a/b/g/n), 160GB 5400rpm (Hitachi no less!), X6 Ultrabase with travel bezel and DVDRW, Vista Business 32, XP Pro downgrade disk set.

First thing I did was to add 2GB RAM (Crucial). Then started Vista, registered the machine, made the Vista Recovery disks (for future use), then I plucked out the 160GB drive and inserted a 200GB 7200rpm Hitachi, installed XP with slipstreamed SP3 and used drivers downloaded from Lenovo. Laptop purrs like a baby lion.

Next, I placed the 160G drive that came with the machine into an external HDD enclosure (made by Ultra ... for SATA laptop drives) and now I use that drive for backups. Just plug it in whenever I need to perform a backup of my files/work; I use it for digital photo storage as well.

Couldn't be happier with the arrangement. It's an awesome little machine for work and a little play (won't be playing Cryo-whatever on this thing - I didn't get it for gaming - but I do like to dabble in some strategy game on longer flights or just to pass the time once in a while). I take my X61 with me on photo trips as well - get to quickly download photos onto the system in the field - the laptop's light enough that I carry it in a knapsack all day while trekking through the bush trying to get that perfect shot - never even feel the thing weighing me down ... LOL my Canon's heavier than the laptop itself!

About the 1GB Turbo mem... quite honestly - it doesn't cut it for me and it just seems to pose more problems for many than it's intended to solve - at least at this stage of the game (witness the many reports of BSOD's and other side-effects associated with Turbo Mem). Besides, you can also just stick in a 4GB SDHC card into the machine's SD slot and use that as memory boost in Vista. IMHO, once the Turbo Mem tech really matures, then it will be possible to add not just 1GB but a 4GB, 8GB or more... then it will be worthwhile. As it is, with 3GB RAM (PC-5300) it's a very performing machine even with Vista. If you like the bells and whistles of Vista, then opt for more RAM instead of the Turbo Mem. An extra 2GB stick of good RAM will set you back no more than $50, well worth it. Of course, Turbo Mem won't even work in XP, so it's pointless in that respect...

Also selling an X61 (see sig). I have one that I am keeping, which I am immensely happy with. Don't miss my T60 with 1400x1050 screen. Resolution is not too big, since its a smaller screen, everything is smaller and about the same size as it was on the T60. Screen brightness is fine and didn't notice much of a difference with the X61s I had for a short time.
