Sun, sun, sun

I figured I'd take advantage of the weather and set up shop in the sun. Admittedly, the display was somewhat hard to read, but that's a small price to pay for the most beautiful work place I've had in years.

Edit: Turned inline pic into link. Also, you're welcome to mock the cheesy mose pad I'm using.

cheers,

Eh... why not.

Built the desk last week, $61.83 in material from Home Depot and an hour to put it together in the basement. Yes, my area is the basement. Simply for the reason... when it was 100+ last week, the temp never got above 65 down there.

Took one look and thought... Head-Fi'er! Hello there. ;)

Here are some awful pics taken on a whim tonight (I used flash on one because the non-flash results were terrible):

Image

And here's a decent pic of my T60 sitting outside the Waldoboro public library in Maine (where we vacationed) where I got some pretty good free wireless internet, even though it was closed so I couldn't go inside!

Anyway, electronic gear in the pics:

T60
Maxtor 200 GB external
V250 cordless mouse and keypad (keypad not in use)
Echo Indigo -> Meta42 portable -> Grado HF-1
(daba probably picked this up) KSC-50's on the hutch
Speed Stick

Heres how it is now. That small TV is my brothers, he let me use it because my TV is on the opposite side of the computer desk. It use to be side by side by I moved it for better reception with my wireless network (motorola sucks). I was in the mood for Metal Gear Solid 2 so I asked him to barrow it.

Image

Heres how it looks when it was clean, a few weeks ago. The 600e doesn't work, I need some ram which i'll be buying this weekend.

Image

The Monitor is a Samsung. My uncle bought it years ago, 98/99? Still works fine. My computer was custom built by my uncle two years ago. AMD Athlon XP 3200+, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700LE, a gig of ram, and VERY LOUD FANS WHICH I HATE. I'm not really a gamer, I only play CS.

My desktop setup - From Left To Right
- HP OfficeJet 5610V printer/scanner/fax, hooked to middle computer via USB

- IBM Thinkpad 755CD, connected to the LAN via it's PCMCIA LAN card

- My custom hot-rod "ATXT" clone PC, old 80's GEM Chassis, Intel PIII motherboard, NVIDIA GeForce MX-4000 PCI/64MB, SB 128 PCI, 80GB HDD, running Windows 2000 Professional and RedHat Fedora Core 5. I use a Northgate OmniKey 102 Keyboard from 1989 or so, a Logitech USB Optical Trackball (as I have a Microspeed PC-TRAC serial trackball that I like better but Windows 2000 does even acknowledge that it exists), and a Samsung SyncMaster 710MP LCD/TV tuner monitor.

- Cheap $30 "kiddie" desk from the thrift store, it's a cheap piece of junk but it does the job well, and that's all that matters.

- HP LaserJet 4, my main printer (I mostly use the office jet for scanning and copying)

- Behringer V-Amp Pro amp modeler, yes, I'm a musician, I play guitar, bass, and synth, and I use this to get my effects and amplifier/cab simulation from.

Image

1994 IBM Thinkpad 755CD
- Pentium 75 Upgrade CPU
- Maximum 40 MB of RAM installed
- 3COM Megahertz X-Jack PCMCIA 16 bit LAN Adapter
- runs at 640X480 @32 bit color on it's little 11" screen
- 1.2 GB HDD
- uses a modern iGO Power Supply from Radio Shack (very expensive)
- Upgraded "new" LIthium Ion Battery (up to 4 hours on a single charge)

Image

1999 IBM Thinkpad I-Series 1400
- Found at a thrift store untested for 4 bux, it works, though is missing a couple essential parts (keyboard and Hard Disk being 2 of them).
- Pentium MMX 300 MHz CPU
- 64MB of RAM on SO-DIMM Memory

Basically, the second one I plan to make a closer portable version of my main PC. As to why I have such archaic hardware

1.) Because I like it better than the new stuff in many ways
2.) Because I'm not exactly what you'd call rich, actually, I'm quite the opposite.

Impressive classics you have got there. :D

I was pretty shocked to see an ATXT chassis like that in the first pic. My reaction was "Uhhh...Waiiiiit" until I read through your post some.

Nice keyboard mad-mike. I used to have an OmniKey Ultra that I swore by until it died a few years back. Those things were the only keyboards I liked better than the IBM Model M. Unfortunately, those old NorthGate keyboards command a pretty high price on eBay as opposed to the IBM Model Ms which can generally be had for less than $20 if you know where to look.

That's awesome!! Turns the lights on, get rid of the desktop icons, and set the taskbar to autohide...and then it will be "transparent."

I found this idea here

P.S. ^^There is an explanation how to make this with photoshop (you will have better results), but I just took a picture of background when the lid is closed and set this pic as wallpaper. Then shoot the whole environment (you should select better angle etc..).

Hello ,
An (artificial) arrangement of a "plugged" T23 :

Image
from left to right :
portable drive bay 2000/USB2.0 , usually with cdrw/dvd (was in use at that time, just a dummy inside)
portable cdrom (internal snd)
bluetooth pcmcia
wlan a/b/g pcmcia
Dock 2631 w 2nd hdd (various HD`s) + 64MB pci graphics
pcmcia to usb2.0 with usb stick, dvb, usb-ide,
calculator/num pad/usb Hub , logi ultraX + 2 "rotring" pens,
the alpha in the background contains a 4.5A brick + targus defcon1,
all you can see fits inside:)
the machine is a 2648-DG1 / 2x512MB seagate-st9411a/40GB + fujitsuMhn2020at/20GB
mainly running 98se though it can boot into 2k xpp an old dos(6.2/22) and 2 Linux`s

tom_k

btw, i like the transparent screen(s), think it would be nice to have in trealtime, maybe with an ultrport cam ( obviously missing above :)

Yes, its a neat effect. I am absolutely positive that if such a product actually existed some folks would buy it, despite being totally impractical (since LCD screens are not screwy enough with color calibration, lets make it a little bit worse by making the whole thing translucent). Then again, you can always get one of those Ultrabrite screens or whatever they are called, and rejoice at all the reflections.
