Bought T42~! Should I cancle for T42p or t43?

#1 Post by Champ » Wed Dec 15, 2004 9:11 pm

This is what I'm thinking of buying

EPP ThinkPad T42 1.8G 512MB 60GB Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional 2378REU 1 $1,899.00
2 512MB PC2700 CL2.5 DDR SDRAM S 31P9832 1 $160.65
3 3YR ONSITE & TPPRO FROM 1YR EZ YNTPO13 1 $293.30
4 ThinkPad Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive (IBM Think Express Program) 73P3294 1 $317.80
5 IBM TrackPoint Cap Collection 73P2698 2 $18.18
6 TP MINI-DOCK WITH POWER CORD (IBM Think Express Program) 287810U 1 $265.3

Any opinonions on my accesory or notebook choice?

My first choice was the T42p 2.0ghz 1gb 60gb DVD Burner KXU for $2799 but it's out of stock and has a really high resolution (UXGA). It has a 9 cell battery, dvd burner, 128ati GL, 1gb stick, 2.0ghz, bluetooth more than the REU.

I could also wait for the T43s to start rollign since I don't "desperately' need it I already have a laptop that's 3 years old yet. But I would like to get myself a nice x-mas gift... choices choices...

What do you intend using the TP for? If it's just general use you won't need a system with specs that high.

People often make the mistake of buying a high-end unit at a premium price when all they are going to do with the machine is use the internet and write e-mail

Steve is right - seriously, if you are gonna just read e mail and use the net, you will find the t22 with 900mhz very fast. Dont give in to the corporate lie that more is better!

I was thinking of something similar, but am now considering external DVD. For this same money I can get firewire 800 card AND a dual layer DVD burner (http://www.firewiredirect.com). Actual burning of a DVD isn't something I HAVE To do on the road, so this seems like it might be a more advantageous solution

Any comments on this from anyone?

If you are going to keep it for four years I would wait for the T43.

Yeah, b/c it will be a relavent system for a lot longer as it will have Alviso and the 533MHz FSB among other things. Since you aren't like dying or anything, buying a notebook that is on the way out doesn't seem like a good idea if you can wait. I couldn't wait, so I bought. Besides, I intend to get a T50p when they come out. But if I didn't intend to be buying again for 4 years I would have thought long and hard about waiting for the T43.

I don't know about your needs, but in an effort to try and save you money. I would suggest getting rid of onsite warranty, unless you need something fixed right away. As IBM has a great turnaround time, usually 3 days... 1 day to ship it to IBM, fix it on the day, and ship back next day. Total 3 days....

Also if you live in the US then the price of the mini dock seems excessively high. You might want to do some searches:

http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... logId=-840

You can get it there for $229, but I have seen them cheaper. Personally I got it considerably less than that direct from IBM...

these are in Canadian dollars

i only save $30 goign to courier for some reason so i'm like erm if the difference is $30 i'd rather not spend the day without the lappy when a key isn't wokring etc.

Anyone think I should go for waiting to see if hte T42p comes back in stock?

It's nice to have all these wants, but I'd say stick with what you actually need. The T42 has actually dropped in price, plus you're getting EPP pricing, which means great value for your money, considering its an IBM. Buying a T43 will net you the latest and greatest, but ask yourself if you really want it and whether you're willing to hand over gobs of money for it.

I bought my T42p GUU for $4200Cdn and similiarly spec T42 laptop goes for $3000 now.

I do do the occasional DVD burning, and bluetooth is nice (haven't used it yet), and the extra ram is nice (1GB), but overall I'm mostly paying for features I'll seldom take advantage of.

I'd say stick with it.
I am Canadian

I wouldn't wait for a T43...since we are talking about months from now, if all goes well. (It could always be delayed due to core chipset, which seems the way Intel is going nowadays...)
