new T61 being a T61p in disguise

#1 Post by Quagmyre » Fri Jun 06, 2008 4:43 pm

So, I finally received my own T61p tonight. Unpacked it and found it to be a 6457-BQG model, but actually a T61.

Well, I had a certified dealer make certain customizations, among which there was getting a WSXGA LCD instead of the default T61p WUXGA for better readability.
So, they apparently slapped the T9300 and the 570m and all the other T61p guts into a 1680x1050 LCD T61 case. I quickly checked the rest of the contained hardware components to be as specified for the T61p and I'm satisfied, except that there is no T61p sticker on the case, hence no apparent bragging ;)

But, on logging on to Windows XP and moving around a bit in Windows, bummer: freezes, bluescreens!
I couldn't run that sucker for more than 2-3 mins before it would crash and burn!

Burned myself the PC doctor ISO from the Lenovo site and ran the tests.
All fine, except - the memory test sometimes fails! It's two 1GB modules, one of them seems to be flaky.

Fine then :( I have 2x2 GB corsair RAM modules lying here for upgrading the memory anyway.

Let's hope that'll fix it for good. Let's keep fingers crossed.

I just received my T61p. When I ordered it towards the end of May the default screen was the WSXGA 1680 x 1050, which is what I got. I love it. Here is a screen shot of the default which is listed on the Lenovo website.

You can get basically the T61p as a T61, the difference I think is that the graphics card is 128mb instead of 256. No big difference unless your going to be doing some major graphics work. If you got the 570 then I guess you do have a T61p. Sounds like you got an awesome machine. Does it have the Centrino vPro processor sticker?

Yes, I've got the 570M and the "Centrino vPro" sticker. There's a Vista sticker on it too, although I got the computer with Windows XP as ordered.

NVIDIA control panel reports the 570M with 512MB, so I guess it is 256MB dedicated + 256MB system RAM.
