Gear list (or, what you travel/commute with)

#1 Post by DavidNZ » Thu Dec 16, 2004 12:31 pm

We had a thread like this recently in a travel forum (partially because I started it), but given that thinkpads are mobile devices, wondering what, if anything, people keep in their bags when they travel or commute.

Oh OK, I'll kick it off (shucks):

X40

DSE 20GB Pocketdrive (1.8" hard drive)

An old Sony Ericsson T200 phone (ugh - desperately need a new phone)

A Palm Tungsten E (ugh - desperately need a new smart phone)

Sony MZ-N710 minidisc recorder/player (ugh - so do NOT want an iPoo)

Sennheiser PX200 headphones (great cans)

*at this point, i'm routing around my bag, so bear with me*

A pack of mints

Two minidiscs - one is an assortment of extended dance remixes from Erasure, the other the same but from the Pet Shop Boys (what an awesome compilation, too)

Mini travel toothbrush, soap, shampoo (from my last trip)

And that's it? Anyone else?

David

> Sometimes my Sony DSC P100 Digi Cam (Red One)
> All wrapped up in my lovely BOOQ Boa.XS back-pack

OBTW

Nice! New Erasure DVD out, by the way: their 1992 tour. Vince Clark is bloody brilliant, and I think I actually like Andy's voice more than most. They both look like hell these days, though. Poor guys... :)

I also picked up the CD5 of Where the Streets have no name the other day - a rare find. I've got something like 60 CDs of them, 75% of which are actual official released - others are bootlegs or homemade compilations.

Ever see them live? I took my girlfriend (now wife) to their show in Toronto 99 (Nightlife tour) and it was sensational.

Yep got the DVD the day it was released here.
Yeah they are kinda looking their age.

I have a trmendous collection of both erasure and PSB also

And I did go and see PSB actually on the same tour just here in California
It was fantastic. That was the 1st time I actually have seen PSB live and they were amazingly better than I was anticipating them to be, live that is

When flying somewhere?? In no particular order:
T40
2nd HD adapter and 5K40 HD full of movies and music
9 cell battery for T40 (backup)
AC charger
IBM DC charger with automotive and EmPower tips
Nomad MP3 player (antique, but it's good enough for my needs)
2 Motorola 720 phones (One for a backup wireless modem!)
David Clark H20-10XL noise attenuating pilot's headset (also used to listen to DVDs and MP3s). Eye magnet for other passengers and a constant source of questioning looks. To be replaced with a Bose Aviation Headset X if Santa is feeling generous next week.
Cell phone headset adapter
Icom A5 handheld transceiver
Palm Vx with E6B flight computer software
Garmin 296 GPS
512MB USB memory key
Sunglasses with Croakie
Spare reading glasses
Passport
Snacks (I'm diabetic, thanks Uncle Sam!)
Blood sugar tester
Maglite mini-flashlight
Cables to make everything "talk" to the T40!
Various and sundry additional crap and all of this stuff is usually split between my Targus bag and my backpack.

All of this is subject to change if I'm heading for a road trip and the pilot stuff will normally be supplanted by my projector.

Then there's my Pelikan case full of stuff if I'm visiting a ship or yard, but I won't go into all of that!

Regards,

James

I have a really nice Targus leather bag that has more pockets and room than most people would know what to do with. In it, I keep my ThinkPad 380ED, a 2nd battery, power cord, some spare floppy disks, a cd case with some games in it, a zip drive, a Belkin 802.11b card, some zip disks, a cable tester, a pair of Sony earbuds, Blue Handspring Visor Deluxe (in a year, when my friends new Clie is unusable from the battery being dead, this sucker will still be running strong), a small $20.00 Vivitar digital camera, some candy, some software, some paper, a screwdriver, a calculator, a nice lapel microphone, some user manuals for various stuff and some spare TrackPoint caps.

Postscript, 4:51PM, 12/16/04: Almost forgot to mention the bag of shelled sunflower seeds, and [censored], am I the only one who posted here so far who does not own a T40?

Don't really travel all that much with the T22, but when I do here is what goes. And you are not alone not having a T4x. ;-)

Ultra Bay Battery
Ultra Bay Floppy drive
Ultra Bay DVD
Wirelss pcmcia card (Symbol card, thanks tselling)
AC power brick
Palm V (antique maybe)
Parker 51 fountain pen
Mechanical pencil
Architectural squeeze seal (registered architect)
Architectural scale
SureFire flashlight E2E

BTW James, how about replacing your mini-mag with a SureFire? ;-) The E1E would be perfect.

Already have two of the A2-HA-RD ones, one of which has mysteriously migrated to my son's Jeppeson case!

I guess I have a basic problem with paying something like $80 for a mini-flashlight to replace one that's more than adequate and came free when I purchased the larger 3 D-cell lights at Home Depot, etc.

I must be one of MAG Industries best customers as I probably have 20 or more of their flashlights around. Each of the larger boats has at least one of the rechargable ones, each of the cars or trucks has a 2 or 3 D-cell, both planes have one or more onboard, my wife has a 2 AA-cell in her briefcase (as do I) and additionally has a 2 AAA-cell in her makeup case for possible emergencies when she's travelling. I also keep a 2 AA-cell one in my shaving case for travel use.

(I keep a 3 D-cell by the back door to jacklight deer in our yard in order to insure that the BB transmitted message to quit the premises is accurately delivered!)

My wife and I have both used our "emergency" flashlights on more than one occasion to light our way down stairwells when the fire alarm has gone off in a hotel during the night. One of my wife's favorite tales is how she was rousted out of a Dallas hotel in the middle of the night and spent the ensuuing wait to return talking to a fellow who was standing in his boxers, Tony Lama boots, a real Stetson and carrying his Thinkpad case. He explained that he'd grabbed everything important to him as he exited the hotel!

James

Yes James, I know what you mean. I have a ton of the Mag Lites too. I got a taste for them when I was a local volunteer Firefighter. I finally decided I wanted something smaller put with a powerful light, hence the SureFire. And yes, the price of entry is a bit high, but so far am pleased and keep the Mags around, each tool has it's use.

Love the Texas hotel story. You have some good tales to tell!

If that were me, it would have been son, wife, Doc Martens, and Thinkpad

Cheers
Bob

I usually travel with my T42 in the waterfield bag with the pouch containing my 9 cell battery, AC Adapter and any small tools I need (screwdrivers and such).

Before going I copy my movies and seinfeld (or family guy) eps to the TP.

And my USB key with all my spyware and antivirus and other tools.
