What are 560 codes 08611 00174?

Older ThinkPads.. from the 600, the 7xx, the iSeries, 300, 500, the Transnote and, of course, the 701

What are 560 codes 08611 00174?

#1 Post by John H » Mon Jun 09, 2008 12:22 am

My old 560 has returned from distant places and exhibits 08611 and 00174 in boot.

I suspect the little battery. I've been told that the screen displays lots of yellow stripes, So maybe I need a new LCD. But I haven't seen a LCD defect yet. Looks like I can find an LCD easy and cheap on ebay when the time comes.

You can download the appropriate Hardware Maintenance Manual for your system (560, 560X or 560Z; in three different manuals) from here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 39298.html

8611 error code generally refers to a trackpoint which has become stuck (always moving in a certain direction). The 174 error might be due to the trackpoint or some other problem. You are correct to suspect the CMOS (backup) battery. It should be checked with a voltmeter or swapped out with a fresh battery if no meter is available. You should also be able to access the Easy-Setup test menu (press and hold the F1 key while powering up) which will allow you to check some of the hardware in your system.

thanks for the HMM reference.

Looks like it's basically connectors that need to be reseated in the keyboard and the memory. maybe LCD, too.

I think it'll shape up good once I open it and clean it up.

Opened it up, cleaned up the connectors and reseated them. New battery. That got rid of the error codes. Now I have a balky 4GB HDD, so I'll pull it out again and copy the data over to a newer HDD using another computer, like this T40, that has USB ports.

The old 560 is pretty nice, and I'm looking forward to having it running again.
