You need 200-pin SO-DIMM form-factor.
I have a pc2100 256MB and a pc2700 256MB in my X31 btw: mixed. And it works!

Just make sure it is PC2700. 144-pin won't work, but you won't find a 144-pin that says PC2700 on it. On the other hand, there are some 200-pin ones that will *not* work (DDR2), and some that do work. So do not go by the pins.

Both PC-2100 and 2700 will work; if mixed, both will function as PC-2100.

I thought the X31 operated at PC2100 even with only PC2700 RAM?

That appears to be correct. The early X31 models were supplied with PC2100 memory; the later ones with PC2700. The tawbook.pdf states that in those cases (PC2700 modules), the memory controller limits speed to 266Mhz (i.e., PC2100). So even if you install two PC2700 modules (or PC3200 for that matter), they will only run at PC2100 timings.
