DVD writer for the R61e?

#1 Post by jadmire » Fri Jun 13, 2008 5:28 pm

I just bought a R61e and have boosted its RAM from 512mb to 2GB by installing two 1GB Crucial DDR2/667 modules. Now that that's done, I'm getting ready to move stuff from my old T30 and install software.

I have a couple of questions, the first of which is the topic:

1) Is there an UltraBay DVD writer that will work with the R61e? I've done a bit of searching but haven't found anything specific so far. Would the DVD writer that comes with the R61i work with the R61e? If not, are there any external/portable DVD writers you would recommend? (EDIT: I got an external (USB 2.0) LiteOn 8x DVD writer this morning. I've used LiteOn drives exclusively for my desktops since 2002, so I'm confident in the drive's ability and it should also be easy to set to region-free as most of that manufacturer's drives are.)

2) What components, if any, of Thinkvantage's software should I keep? I gather from what I read here and elsewhere that I would do well to get rid of Access Connections. How should I do that and re-set Windows to manage networking? Should I keep Diskeeper Lite and PC-Doctor?

I've just bought a similar configured r61e couple weeks ago. When trying to swap out my ultrabay dvd drive after un-screwing the screw at the bottom, it seems something is still holding the drive. According to Hardware Maintenance Manual, all I have to do is to unscrew 1 screw.

Has anyone successfully swap out a dvd from R61e?

ps: I've also tried a 15" 4x3 R60e and it was extremely easy, 1 screw and I'm done.
