Clean XP Pro SP3 Install on X24

#1 Post by graywolf » Sat Jun 14, 2008 8:37 pm

Thought someone might want this info.

I just redid a clean install of a N-Lite customized version of Windows XP professional with SP3 slipstreamed into it. The only IBM/lenovo drivers needed to get everything working are the Power Management Driver, and the Display Driver, everything else seems to be in XP. I also had to load the driver from my 3Com Xjack wireless, but that is to be expected.

The IBM drivers are kind of strange. You run the setup file downloaded from Lenovo's website and that puts them into a Driver Folder on the C: drive. Then you have to go into the proper folder and run Setup. Both the Display Driver, and the Power Management Driver work that way.

The Power Management Driver is needed if you want Standby and Hibernation to work. The Display Driver automatically sets the LCD to the proper settings while the XP driver defaults to VGA (Ugh!).

The reason for all of that is I just upgraded the 30gb drive to a 60gb 7200rpm I got from a guy on eBay. I gave up on getting a 100gb because you guys want them more than I do. I have set it up with a 20gb Windows partition and a 37gb Documents partition.

I bought one of those little USB 2.5" harddrive enclosures thinking it would let me just clone my old drive to the new one. What the seller did not mention is that it only works with USB 2.0. Not much use with an X24. It would not work on my workstation's hub either, but does when pluged directly into one of the USB ports. I guess I have something that is not USB 2.0 plugged into the hub, or maybe it is not USB 2.0 as I have had it a long time.

I have just finished installing Office 2003 and Photoshop CS2 from CD's (at least the old CD Burner works on USB 1.1). I only have a couple more programs to load from CD's, then the rest can be loaded from my archive server over the network which makes things easier. My Documents is also copied to the server, so that will be easy to get back up.

I guess I rambled long enough, but at least I can confirm that SP3 works fine on the old laptop.

nLite is a great tool. Slipstreaming SP3 into an XP install CD is a very good use of the tool, even though it's been named for it's other benefit - reducing the install footprint of XP.

I recently slipstreamed SP3 into XP and reduced the install size when working with a small (2GB) flash disk. It worked perfectly.

nLite is also free and easy to use --> http://www.nliteos.com/nlite.html
