NHC ACPI/Fan Control Profile for T60

#1 Post by DarkScythe » Sun Jun 15, 2008 6:51 pm

Hello,

The fan on my T60 is kind of noisy.. I'm not sure if that's what they all sound like, or if this one is just defective. When it spins up it sounds like it's vibrating or something.. but I've checked and it's screwed down tightly, and nothing is in the way of the fan blades.

Anyway, I was thinking maybe I could lessen the noise by lowering the fan speed. My friend suggested I use Notebook hardware Control to do it, so I downloaded it. Problem is it appears to rely on some sort of ACPI profile that is not included. I'm not entirely sure how to go about making one, so does anyone have one already set up for handling the fan on a T60?

Thanks in advance.

It's not NHC but this should work for what you want it to do:

If the noise is being caused by a bad fan, slowing down the fan kinda only makes it less apparent. I'd get the bad fan replaced. There are a lot of fan and heatsync combos on ebay.

Thanks, I gave TPFanControl a try.
I have not done much testing on it just yet though, I've been swamped with work this week.

As far as replacing the fan - the problem is I don't know how the T60's fan is normally supposed to sound. The seller said the old one made a high pitched whine, so he replaced it with this one. He sent me both to see for myself. I hooked both of them up to a 4.5v battery DC source to hear it. The old one is definitely much more annoying, it sounds like a small hair dryer. This new one makes a much lower pitched hum, almost like it's vibrating, even when I'm holding it and not feeling anything. I'm not sure if both are defective or what. I'd rather not waste money in buying another one to find out it sounds exactly the same.

FWIW: The fan in my T60 runs at about 3100 rpm to keep the GPU at about 66 degrees C. It is VERY quiet. You can barely hear it in a quiet room. The 60gb HD makes more noise and it's also very quiet.
