Thinkpads Vista Business System Recovery ?

#1 Post by MarT40 » Tue Jun 17, 2008 12:33 pm

Is the Windows PC Complete Backup and Restore feature of Vista Business and Vista Ultimate supported by the recovery partition on Thinkpads?

To use the Windows Restore feature for the complete system one needs to start the Windows Recovery Environment that is on the Vista Install DVD. I understand that OEM manufacturers can install this portion of Windows on their recovery partitions. Does Lenovo?

What do Thinkpad users with Vista Business or Ultimate recommend?
. Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery
. Windows PC Complete Backup and Restore
. Third party utilities like Acronis True Image

My vote goes for Acronis True Image 10 (11 seems to still have some issues). If you like the idea of the hidden partition you can create one with Acronis and even update it whenever you´d like to ;) Besides, Acronis is much faster for me than R&R.

As to your first question, Vista built-in restore feature and the R&R recovery partition are two very different things. If you mean whether Vista could restore your system by using the recovery partition, AFAIK that´s not possible. Nor can Vista restore your system using any recovery media created by R&R.

I don´t use R&R anymore but I don´t remember any options in the R&R predesktop area allowing one to run windows restore. However, as for now, I might be wrong.

Just my 2 cents

If someone buys a Thinkpad they get Rescue and Recovery free.

If they buy a Thinkpad with Vista Business or Vista Ultimate they get Windows PC Complete Backup and Restore free. However they need the Windows Recovery Environment to use all of it.

Third party apps cost money and often break when SPs are released.

Maybe the answer is to get Linux and buy the preferred version of Vista.

I found out that Neosmart hosts ISO images of the Windows Recovery Environment for 32 bit and 64 bit Vista. Note that these images do NOT install Vista.

If you are looking only for Windows Recovery Environment images, you can find a lot in the web including LEGAL torrents.

Cheers
