The state of vista sp1 vs xp sp3 power consumption in x6X
Hi,

I can get something like eight hours on the tablet with the wireless off.
I've never deliberately tested it, but I've definitely had at least five or so hours with wireless on and still had battery life to spare. I'm not a socket fiend and I can still go for my whole day on the 8-cell.

Thought I would like to share this after googling and stuff http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/03/2 ... indows-xp/
XP SP3 vs Vista(ultimate) SP1 power consumption (19/06/08 )
ok i have done some tests. had a spare partition on my x60s and installed vista.
vista. installed all ibm drivers except bluetooth, thinkpad access connection and diagnostic. index searching disabled, aero disabled. no usb devices plugged in.
both xp and vista were set to the same level of brightness. settings were fixed to same level as much as possible.
Conclusion: 10++ mins extra on xp very hard to tell but the power drain was pretty close between the 2. infact it might be the same if i had waited for a full discharge but i don't have time for that. this was based on a rough gauge of the total batt time of what i saw the power manager give me from 93-96% discharge)
Analysis: well interestingly enough about 99% of the time in terms of amps and voltages both had 0.48~ and 16.00~ volts. what happened in vista was that it would suddenly jump amps for no reason. from 0.48 - 0.90 all of a sudden and this would cause a decrease in life expectancy. (using information from thinkpad's powermanager). Sometimes this jump doesn't happen at all for long periods. (possibly some fresh install process running maybe)
additionally, the xp sp3 is a 10 month old os (there are a number of programs running. there isn't any anti virus installed). programs: norton ghost, sandboxie, office onenote, microsoft encarta dictionary.
so xp sp3 still wins overall considering it has quite a few programs already installed and the vista was fresh.
be aware this is not a scientific test just a quick crash test for my notebook. i didn't wait to see when batt was drained off totally, i just compared the power manager results. no volt meter. Additionally i didn't do a stress test.(i don't run stressful programs when i am unplugged so it was useless info for me).
This is for all the people reading this post that are trying to find out the power consumption of vista is acceptable.
I'll probably move to vista in my next format. 10 mins or so is acceptable to me.
kudos to microsoft they have tamed the beast in terms of power consumption
