FX 570M - Driver v6.14.11.7471 (174.71)

#1 Post by agarny » Wed Jun 18, 2008 4:08 am

Hi, I have been experiencing some 'random' crashes of my T61p (WinXP SP3 32-bit). As far as I can tell, it always happened when I was away from my computer and, therefore, when my screensaver was running (Helios - http://www.reallyslick.com/).

I use the same screensaver under Ubuntu 8.04 and never had any problem, which makes me think that there might be an issue with NVIDIA's driver. I use the version available on the Lenovo website, i.e. v6.14.11.7471 (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67924).

Would someone know whether there are known issues with that driver (and or maybe the Helios screensaver?)?

Cheers, Alan.

People have reported all kinds of problems with SP3. Maybe that's the culprit?

Indeed, SP3 could be the cause of my problems... Argh! Microsoft!! :(

Wouldn't be so quick on that one. Those screensavers seem to be heavyweight OpenGL consumers so IMHO the Nvidia driver theory is not so far off.

Use a different, simple screensaver and see if the problem persists.

I still have my doubts about SP3, but in this particular case I don't think it's the culprit. Indeed, I have disabled my screensaver since I posted my original message and I haven't experienced one single crash since.

So, yes, it would seem that my screensaver is too heavyweight for the NVIDIA driver to handle. This is a real shame, because it works perfectly fine under Linux (or rather: I haven't yet experienced any crash under that system).
