Norton problems and antivirus recommendations?

My thinkpad T60 originally came with Symantec Client Security 3.1, but I haven't been able to find a way to renew a single license for that (only multi-user packages seem to be available), so I purchased a copy of Norton Internet Security 2008. Installing it caused my wireless to stop working - access conncetions and F5 can't turn the wireless on any more. Uninstalling Norton2008 fixed the problem, but leaves me without a modern antivirus program. Are there any recommendations out there for a simple antivirus and firewall combo without the hangups of Norton (in particular, that plays well with the Thinkvantage software?) Or any familiarity with how to make Norton 2008 coexist with my T60.

You may try this before you decide to pay.

Personally, I don't like and never use any anti-virus and anti-spy programs. I almost can't rememeber the last time when I had a virus, humm..., I think it was back to the era of DOS.

I've been pleased by Eset NOD32; it is noticably faster than my old security suites, protects well and updates often. My only complaint is the "scanned by Eset" messages on my email.

i'm trying out the free versions of avg v7.5 for antivirus ( http://free.grisoft.com/ ) and comodo v3 for firewall ( http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ ). i'm keeping my eye on the comodo antivirus beta, too.

previously, i was a paying customer for norton antivirus and sygate firewall products.

Symantec Client Security 3.1 is a very good product. It is really too bad it is not available in single quantities.

Norton Retail Anti-Virus generally has a bad rap - some of it earned, and some of it not earned (as a result of people not setting it up properly). However, I have had good experience with Norton Internet Security 2008 Retail. It proved easy to work with, and while it takes a while to get started, it doesn't seem to impinge upon performance like older products did.

Myself, I use the Corporate product and like it.

I use AVAST, which is also free, and it seems to work well, as it integrates seamlessly with Outlook (which I use for email, contacts, and calendar), and I have not gotten an infection ever since I installed it.

I used to use the Kerio Pro firewall (I got it from a corporate acct. at my job) and I was happy with it, but I decided to test Vista's firewall before installing Kerio, and it seems to be doing a good job. Just my two cents.

I'm also a big fan of NOD32. I was previously a user of AVG Professional, which was always considered to be an excellent performer. Unfortunately, Grisoft apparently fixed it so good that it's performance is abysmal now without disabling a lot of its features. NOD32 is considerably faster than AVG ever was.

Also, you can turn off the messages referenced in the quote above via the advanced configuration tree.

Here's another vote for NOD32. AVG is fine for a free version, but I really like the speed of NOD32, as well as some of the advanced configuration options. I haven't used the latest version (haven't needed to being windows free

), but I did install it for my parents, who aren't the most tech-savvy, and they love it.

I like NOD32 also. My system is much faster and more reliable since replacing Nortorn Internet Security 2007 with NOD32.

ESET NOD32, if you are willing to pay for an AV. Fastest, quietest and the best AV that I have used.

AVG Free if you want a free version ... not the fastest or the quitest but does the job way better than free versions of McAfee or Norton.

I would recommend to try nod32 trial for a couple of weeks and buy a license if it works good for you. I been using nod32 for some time now and not been able to find another AV that i like better.
I would also recommend to visit the official nod32 support forum or ask the nod32 users in here to get some tips how to setup nod32 since the wrong settings could make the performance slow.

another vote for nod32.

just purchased it to replace avg free v7.5, which is nearing end-of-life. i wasn't comfortable with reports of avg v8, so nod32 it is after reading many recommendations here and elsewhere.

if so, did you notice any significant increase in memory/system resource usage? how about speed... any slower at scanning?

Firewall... Sorry, am not good in this area.

NIS 2008 is faster than 2007, but the overhead that it creates is still far too much for my liking.

I use the Corporate products on my own machines, but I installed NIS 2008 on a client machine. I set it up after installation, and once the computer starts, NIS 2008 is invisible. No resource impingement of any kind in regular operation. ... JDH

Yes, I did use 7.5.

As for any differences in performance/resource usage/scanning speed; I have not noticed any significant negative changes.
That said, I have not done extensive testing - I have just used my system as before and found the upgrade to be worthwhile.
I like the new interface and options.

I won't say AVG 8 Free is any better or worse than other programs, but it does its job for me.
