"T41i" Buildup

#1 Post by schen » Fri Jun 20, 2008 11:50 am

It's probably not very exciting for you guys with T43s and/or have had T40 series for a long time, but having just moved over from a T30; I'm pretty stoked! :D

So here it is:

*2373-700 arrived by UPS yesterday. Verified that everything worked (since the one I sent back last week had a bad sound chip).
*Took it apart.
*Put in a Gig of Kingston RAM with the heat spreader.
*Installed a Dothan CPU w/ a "longfan" I got from Ed last week.
*Put on the SXGA+ T41p screen assembly that I got last week.
*Took the screen assembly apart and replaced the left hinge that I neglected to notice had broken screw holes!
*Reassemble the screen and reattach.
*Do the BIOS hack so I can put in my old Atheros chipped WiFi card.
*Put in DVD Multi-Burner and battery that I bought 2 weeks ago.
*Replace the old 40Gb HDD with a new 7200rpm/80Gb Hitachi that I've been hoarding.
*Re-install software.... re-install software... re-install software....
*Still re-installing software; interspersed with about a thousand MS updates!

*Now I just have to wait for the arrival of the Bluetooth CDC and I'll be finished.

So I'm the proud owner of a T41i (for "improved"). Now next on to the next project; to replace my wife's A31 with a R5x. There are downsides to teaching/coaching, but the summers are GREAT!

You just missed it! I sold my year old 7200rpm/80Gb drive a week ago. The one I'm using now is my one and only spare. Hopefully I won't need another any time soon or I'll be in big trouble!

Longfan

#4 Post by marvel » Sat Jun 21, 2008 12:42 pm

Excuse a noob question: the "longfan" - is it with gpu cooling support, similar to this r50 fan http://mysite.verizon.net/hjc56/snapshots/fan.jpg

???

Had a t41p with 1,7 ghz pm. Replaced that on with 2 ghz dothan. Suppose the fan i OK, the laptop behaving normally...

Yup, that exactly what "longfan" stands for. I wasn't really concerned, but I figured that since I was tearing into this machine anyway.... what the heck! I might as well do that as well. If I could have afforded it, I would have loved to have put in a 2Ghz Dothan like yours.

I just checked on ebay and it isn't that expensive, 20-30 $US.
May be if I find a PM755 for my T42 ......

Last time I check on ebay, Dothans up to 1.7-1.8 weren't that bad. Something in the under $50 range. but the 2.0Ghz CPUs jump up to over $120.

I just can't justify it for what I do with the machine. I'd rather put the money into bumping the RAM up to 2Gb.
