8 Gig RAM

#1 Post by adrianaitken » Fri Jun 20, 2008 2:56 pm

A while back there was a topic about putting 8Gig (2 x 4Gig modules) in X61 laptops.
Well, they are now appearing on ebay but at the current price I'd like to be sure that they work. The guy selling them (Samsung modules) says to check www.memoryx.net which for Lenovo X61 states is a max of 2 x 2Gig RAM modules.

Has anyone taken the plunge and upgraded to 8 Gig and if so what operating system are you running ?

The X61/X61s can theoretically supports 8gb of ram. However, are you sure the 4gb modules on ebay isn't for desktop/server and not laptop?

PC2-5300 CL5 (Cas Latency) 1.8v using 512Mx64 chips

The seller lists a bunch of Dell,Tosh and HP/Compaqs which defineately can use them.

This is encouraging. Works on a T61p, at least.

holy! It would cost as much as a new laptop to get 8GB of RAM. ($1,200!!!)

I guess i'll max my system out with 3GB and be happy with that :)

US$650 via the UK ebay seller.
Trouble is you need to move upto 64 bit to use it and none of my programs are native 64 bit.

Actually the chipset does use 8gb, since it is the same as the T61p in the link I had above.

Although nobody has actually tried it with an X61 yet...

It's whether Lenovo has crippled the BIOS is the important question. If they have then it doesn't matter if the chipset supports it or not.
