Ghosting new harddrive with norton ghost

#1 Post by sooba » Fri Jun 20, 2008 11:05 pm

So I upgraded my factory 40 gig harddrive to a hitachi 5k160 (the 7k100's are way too expensive now that they stopped making them.) Anyways I downloaded norton ghost 12 and did the "copy harddrive" and threw the new harddrive in an external usb case and it completed but it will not boot from it now that i put it in the laptop. Is it even possible to do what im trying to do? Did i do anything wrong ? Any help would be good

I suggest you have a look in the threads Thinkpad Won't Boot After Using Norton Ghost and Ghosting a Thinkpad - in particular see the -ib switch (note: I have no idea of that also applies to Norton ver. 12, but the "-ib" thing has troubled many!). Also at IBM's site there is a note about this; see Partition does not boot after being restored with Norton Ghost - NetVista / ThinkCentre / ThinkPad General . By the way, there is also a very useful "How-To" clone a HDD in the ** HOW TO's & FAQ's ** section - did you check that?

I never used Norton for cloning disks; I am using Acronis True Image - you may download their trial version free of charge and use that to clone your HDD - get it here --> Acronis True Image. Make a bootable Acronis "rescue" CD-ROM, and boot from that with your original HDD in your ThinkPad and the new HDD in the USB enclosure, and make the clone. In this way you won't need to install Acronis True Image on you HDD (it takes up a good bit of diskspace).

Update: I just found the Norton Ghost ver. 12 manual --> here, and on page 151, in the "About copying a drive" it says this:
Note: You must install a fully licensed version of Norton Ghost 12.0 before you can use the Copy Drive feature. This feature is not available in the evaluation version.
Could that possibly be part of the explanation?? Aaah; why mess around with Ghost if you can much easier just get Acronis?!

Hey

I cloned my 5400rpm drive onto a 7200rpm Hitachi Travelstar. I tried it first with Norton Ghost, and it failed to work.

I used Acronis software and it worked perfectly.

Acronis recognises the hidden IBM partition which is needed to make the new drive boot.

Use this software and you will be fine.
IBM Thinkpad T42. 1gb Ram. Hitachi Travelstar 5400rpm 40GB HD running XP Pro

IBM Thinkpad T43. 2gb Ram. Fujitsu 5400rpm 40GB HD running XP Pro. 640GB external USB2.0HD.

Wanting to swap the screens on these! Any ideas??

After Ghosting, I've received the flashing cursor in the upper left hand corner of the LCD. This utility from Lenovo has fixed it several times. Use the correct one for your default O.S. - XP or Vista, both are downloadable from this link --> http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 54483.html

(With a T4x, it'll be the XP option.)

As stated above, whien using Ghost, you need to use the “-ib” switch. The BIOS used by IBM/Lenovo in the T4x series (possibly others as well) uses a larger boot record on the drive than is standard. Ghost in the default mode only copies the standard length boot record, truncating some of the needed data.

I use Ghost 7.5 extensively for cloning T4x drives. I have nothing against Acronis, but I bought Ghost several years ago and it works fine for me. For T4x cloning, you need to invoke Ghost from a DOS command. I created two single line batch files which I have on a bootable USB drive, along with Ghost and GDISK – the command that lets you verify which logical drive the internal one is assigned to (T40-42 is opposite of T43)

The DOS command line in the batch files are:

Code: Select all

GHOST -clone,mode=copy,src=2,dst=3 -ib –fni
(for cloning logical drive 2 to 3)

Code: Select all

GHOST -clone,mode=copy,src=3,dst=2 -ib -fni
(for cloning logical drive 3 to 2)
