Fonts too big on a 15" UXGA ?

#1 Post by wearetheborg » Sun Jun 22, 2008 4:33 am

I reinstalled XP on a T43P (using T60p recovery discs and doing an update).
The fonts appear too big on it compared to my R50P UXGA. How do I fix this ? The DPI is set at 96, and font size at normal. I'm really puzzled.

Check that:

1) "Font size" is set to norrmal in the "Display Properties" --> "Appearance" tab - the one shown in Fig. 2 here, (or was this what you've already did?)

2) That you are using the same font and font size for the various elements on your desktop - select the "Advanced" tab (as shown in Fig. 2, right), and check all elements (text size and -type) and the same as on your R50p,

3) "Screen Resolution" is set to UXGA - you know in the slider as shown in Fig. 3. You've probably already done that..

If this does not cure your issue, I don't know what may be the explanation...? Except that perhaps you have (or haven't) enabled ClearType?

I have verified all the things you mentioned.
There are some menus which are of the same size in both laptops, like start->all programs. But the start menu in the T43P has larger fonts than the start menu in R50P. And the fonts on the desktop icons are bigger on the T43
I have installed SP3 on the T43P, but not on the R50P - could that be the issue ?

This may sound strange, but.....

Start "accessibility wizard" under start\programs\accessories and just hit next until it is done. Don't say you are blind or the fonts are too small or anything like that.

I have no idea why it works like that. It has been a bug in all the T4x recovery sets with SXGA and UXGA displays for some time. They never fix it, so I go thru the process every time I configure a high-res screen.

I too had certain fonts too big after doing a factory install on my T60. So I ran the Accessibility Wizard like you said, which seemed to fix the problems, except it shrunk all the title bars so that all the Minimize/Maximize/Close buttons in the upper-right were tiny! Then I found this article from MS http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306280 which set the title bars back to normal. But then it also enlarged the folder icons in the Start menu and the icons in the System Tray, so that instead of looking nice and smooth, they looked jagged and ugly! Then I did a little more experimenting, and found out I didn't need to run Accessibility Wizard at all. All you need to do is to open up your Display Properties, and go to the Themes tab, and I think it will be set to "Modified Theme" or something like that. Just change it to the "Windows XP" theme and all your enlarged fonts will go back to normal. But I had already done the damage to my system. I noticed that even the logon prompt (before any user logged in) had the background image changed and had a shrunken title bar. Might be easier for me to just restore the factory image, change the Theme, and everything should be just right.
