Question about R51

#1 Post by tony6264 » Thu Jun 26, 2008 7:47 pm

Is there some inherant problem with R51's and power issue.
I am asking because I have a chance to pick one up pretty cheap and the issue is that it wont power on...I really dont know anything else at this point.

Hey Tony,

I moved this to the R conference, so that you will get quicker responses...

I'm kinda in the same boat. I picked up an R51e that I though was just a smashed screen, but I get nothing but a quick flick of the power light when I plug in the ac adapter. Not even a beep code with no RAM. Any thoughts??

No...Sorry, I have not even picked this one up yet...I am just trying to see if there is some problem that all or most of them have that I should be aware of......it is for sale locally for $75.00 but they say it does not power up and that is all I know so far.

If it has discrete graphics, most likely a GPU issue.

Not to be flippant, but it's possible that the power issue(s) led to the smashed screen!?! :?

I believe that all the "e" machines had an Intel integrated video chip (Intel 855GM), so it's not likely that it came up with the GPU problem that is fairly common. It's entirely likely that the machine just died of a more "run of the mill" death, such as a blown fuse on the MB etc. On another train of thought, have you tried some different (known working) RAM of the correct spec?

I have not tried new RAM ram and as I was expecting a beep error code with no RAM, but no luck. I bought this really cheap and have already benefited from the b/g card that was snagged and is happily in my R40. These orphaned "e" series don't have the dock port to make testing a bit easier. I am trying to borrow a friends monitor to do additional testing.

I have carefully looked over this MB and no dark spots, missing pieces, spills, smells, or anything out of the ordinary. Would an overheated CPU act like this? If so, would anyone be willing to test my CPU to rule-out?

at schen, I thought the same thing but its just the screen. If it would have been me, It would have been in 100 pieces!!

It could be a CPU, but you'd have to put in a known good one to tell. It should take any of the 400Mhz bus chips (either the Banias, Dothan or equivalent Celeron). You might be able to borrow one if you don't have one or pick one up cheap, since many people have upgraded Celeron and Banias equipped machines to Dothan CPUs. If I was a bet'in man though, I'd have to say that there's something wrong with the MB. It's just rare that CPUs just randomly go bad.

What you may end up having is a good case, with a bad MB and LCD. If it was really cheap like you said, then it might be a good source of parts. I don't know what's interchangeable with the R5x machines, but you might be able to at least salvage, the screen housing, KB, drives, and WiFi card. You might use that as a starting point to slowly piece together a working R5x over time.

Try running without the battery.

#11 Post by holdenburg » Sun Jul 20, 2008 8:45 pm

Just a thought that you should try.

Sometimes the battery is bad and causes this symptom.

1.) Remove the battery, hold the power key without the a/c adapter and battery for a few seconds to clear the system.
2.) Attache the a/c adapter only and try to power the unit.

From the sounds of this it could be the system board based upon the symptoms you describe. The steps above are basic troubleshooting prior to replacing the system board.

When you replaced the video did you change the inverter board also?

Best Regards;
