Jacked laptop Display

#1 Post by catscam » Mon Jun 30, 2008 3:13 am

I was just given a HP Pavilion zd7000 laptop that seems to be running fine except the LCD display is jacked (Pictures below). I have never seen this plaid pattern on a display & am not sure if the display is bad or maybe one of the connections got damaged. The external VGA works fine so it’s putting out clean video; I was just hoping someone has seen this so I don’t needlessly rip into the screen & it turns out to be something else.

Any Ideas?
Thanks

I had an A22M do a similar, (not quite the same), display and it was a bad LCD.

Start with replacing the inverter, then the LCD cable and as a last resort the LCD itself. This is a 15.4" wide screen, so expensive!
If the rest runs fine, and the LCD cost is prohibitive, I'd take the LCD lid off and use it as a desktop with an external monitor.
There's a full keyboard incl. numeric keys.

It would not be the inverter as that only turns the backlight on - which is working. I also doubt that it is the LCD itself (could be wrong though).

I would guess it is probably a bad cable connection, bad cable, or bad GPU. You can rule out a bad GPU by plugging in an external monitor. If the external monitor displays correctly then the GPU is fine.

Not quite!
The external monitor works on an analog signal, but the LCD works on a digital signal. These are two quite different signals!
That's one of the problems of the T30 and (some) T4x, external works, but internal doesn't.
The BGA needs to be redone with a heatgun thingamayoke in the T30, don't know for T4x.

FYI, it's a 17" wide screen.

This HP model and its successors have well-documented display issues. Check this link about an HP zd8000.

I found this link, which refers to a settlement between HP and zd owners to fix their computers free-of-charge. The latest activity was two days ago so, hopefully, you're still in luck.

Thanks for that BeeJayEmm, from what I was reading things were looking good, so I called HP & they directed me to http://www.hpnotebooksettlement.com/ were they state to take place in the class action lawsuit you must complete a claim Form and mail it postmarked by April 4, 2008 to receive compensation or repair. Not sure were to go from here, I may be to late for the free repair. :(

the last guy on there wasnt till the end of june this year. you might try to email him and find out what he says he had to do. your HP is covered where mine which is a zd8000 is not. my zd8000 though you can tell needs a new screen and i have stopped alot of the heat that was coming off of it with a cooling pad which has stopped some of the damage that was being done. new screen is on order and due in the end of the week first of next. now i have a compaq presario that the screen looks just like that one of yours when i turn it on now. not sure of the problem there it worked fine when i first got it then went to squiggly lines in the display then to a totally white screen while it is booting and then it looks like the old static you use to get in tv's. good luck with your 7000 i know it gets frustrating.
