recommendations for PCMCIA USB 2.0 card?

#1 Post by jamnkats » Mon Jun 30, 2008 7:01 am

I'm looking to get a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card (to provide USB 2.0) for my T30 to make backups go faster. We have a friend of a friend coming down and he can bring some stuff down. Are they all pretty much the same or is one brand better than another? I am hoping to speed up my backups which currently take 8 hours.
T30 2366-61U dead mobo
T30 2366-81U still works but not being currently used. I think I'll rectify that situation.
T40 2373-19U dead
(2) T42 2373-JXU with Flexview LCDs. One with either GPU or southbridge issue.
T43 2687-D4U with possible software problem. Awaiting R&Rs.

Any USB2.0 card that has a NEC chipset will work fine.
The card that fits inside the slot, without sticking out (AKE) only has an output of 100mA, and you need 500mA, so don't get that.
And when he's coming, ask him also for some Arctic Silver thermal paste for your CPU!

mine is a USB 2.0 4-port VIA chipset no-name pcmcia card...
it's working fine, the only "glitch" was when i plugged an internal cardreader modified (added a usb cable) to be external, rated on the label 500mA - and the whole computer froze... indication that the 500mA on the usb card is really less...
ex: T30, TR451, TR453, R51, R52, X40, X60, R61, T400
X200 - P8600 2.66Ghz, 3G, 250G
G50-70 - 3558U 2.4Ghz, 4G, 1T

The Belkin card in my sig has been great. Had it for several years and never had a problem. Mine is probably an older, discontinued model so you may have to check on their current product line.

I have several, NEC and VIA. The Via seems to work with more external disks than the NEC cards.
Make sure you get the extra power cable to enable use of HDDs and cams etc. USB sticks work ok in all of them without the extra power.
Where to begin......
390e x1 390X 390X,700mhz
1 x T20 + about 8 untested for spares
4 X T23 + 6 breaking for parts
1 X T23 with Samsung 840 SSD and XP Great combination !

AND NOW....3 X T60s and 3 x T61s

I have an older SanDisk cruzer mini flash drive that won't work in my Belkin 500mA PC card, without using the wall wart.
