t43p freezes, comes back when shaken

#1 Post by jacob22jacob22 » Mon Jun 30, 2008 12:10 pm

Hey - I just replied to an older thread but realized it would probably be better to make my own post rather than have different issues in the same thread, etc.

My t43p started freezing periodically (at least several times an hour) about a week ago. Everything was working fine and then for a few days it started freezing and after I turned it off I couldn't get it back on for a day or so. I've realized now that if I shake it a little when it freezes it seems to come back. Does that mean a wire is loose?

As far as I can tell its not a virus or malware...when it doesn't freeze it isn't slow and I've run several cleaners.

Any idea what it is? What the best way to get it checked out?

Hopefully, Jacob, there is still a warranty. I would call Lenovo and arrange for service.

To me your problem reflects a motherboard failing or failure.

OK, thanks. I'm trying to avoid doing that because I need my computer right now for a variety of reasons. I know if I send it in it will take a long time to get back to me. If it matters, I've also notice a lag in the clock on the computer...it seems to get behind and I have to have it realign wiht internet time.

I just ran PC doctor and did the three motherboard tests (CMOS, PCI, RTC) and they all passed if that matters.

I know that being without your ThinkPad when you need it is a problem.

The repair should take 3-4 days.

I think the problem is with the GPU.

Just wanted to thank brad...he was right on the money. Sent it in and it came back in about 36hours completely fixed...awesome.

One quick related question...they said my battery is bad and needs replacing but not covered. what is the difference between these two:

Batteries at lenovo.com

I can see the one is bigger and more expensive but what is the difference in power/how long the battery will last unplugged?

One battery attaches in the traditional position in the rear and the other replaces the optical drive. They are of different compostions. The traditional battery will give you longer life.

I think he meant that I was right about the repair time. Since it is now working with most likely a new motherboard it would be hard to say if it was the GPU or?

There may be a repair invoice in with laptop telling you what was replaced...

You are right. There usually is a note describing their work. It usually will just say planar. So they replaced the motherboard. Why did they replace it? Because the old one didn't work. I haven't seen them describe the actual reason for the replacement.

They replace many T4x motherboards and many due to graphics card, but in many cases I don't think they even bother checking what causes the instability exactly.
