Simple XP Pro log in question..

#1 Post by SaberX » Mon Jun 30, 2008 9:30 pm

I know this will seem like a simple question but here it goes....

I just did a clean install of Xp Pro sp2. Not from the hidden partition but from a XP Pro sp2 cd.And used the windows COA on the bottom of the system.
All went well and used the system update and got all the newest drivers.
Everything is fine.
BUT now every time i turn on the thinkpad , it comes to a point where it askes for a user name and password.
I dont have any passwords on it.I leave it blank and hit enter and it then boots up.
I like to have it so when i hit the power , it will just boot up into windows without asking for a password.

I have been looking around in windows and cant seem to find anything.

There are several ways to affect the logon screen at startup. However, more than likely, a "hidden" user has been installed with windows. The user is ASPNET. ASPNET is connected to Netframework 1.1 and when installed (sometimes) creates the ASPNET user account. However, since ASPNET is not really a user, it doesn't show up on the Logon screen, but still affects it because XP thinks there are two different users. Since XP thinks there are two users, it will show you the logon screen, and since ASPNET is not really a user, only your account is shown and causes you to have to hit the enter key. Very funky stuff!

To disable this... go to Start > Run and type in compmgmt.msc
Once in the Computer Management screen, expand Local Users and Groups, then click on the Users folder.

In the right window... right-click on the ASPNET user name and select Properties. In the Properties window... put a check mark in Account is disabled , then click OK.

Hopefully that will solve your problem... if it is ASPNET that's causing it. Of course if it's not ASPNET, then it might be something else... in which case, I guess we keep trying!

Install TweakUI http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakui.htm
In there is a setting for automatic default user. (Logon/Autologon)

here is one way

To Login automatically to a user account, follow the instructions below:

1) Click on Run
2) Type in the following command and click OK

control userpasswords2

3) Highlight the user you want to log into automatically, then uncheck the box for

"Users must enter a username and password to use this computer"

4) Click on Apply and you'll be asked to verify the username and password to log in automatically
5) Click OK and the next time you restart your computer, you'll automatically be logged in without having the classic prompt or Welcome Screen.
