T30 base casing replacement surgery *PIC*
T30 base casing replacement surgery *PIC*
Yesterday, during a 2-hour "surgery" i replaced the bottom part of the casing of my T30 - taken for a spare-parts-machine T30 1.8Ghz
in case anyone is interested i can post some pictures - but it's a fairly easy job, following the service manual
after that i have some observations and questions:
- the 1.8 model has some sort of "radiator" fitted with thermal pad for a group of inductors located underneath the pcmcia slot (on the other side of the board) - my original casing didn't have it - so i removed it from the new one... did i do wrong?
- the cooling grill for the processor (left side near the pcmcia slots) is less "perforated" on the 1.8 model - so i kept the original one
- obviously the model number is different... maybe it's stupid but i'd like to keep my old label on the "new" casing... how can i remove it without breaking it?
Other than that there ar no differences between the 2 cases
from the surgery i'm left with some spare parts - if it wasn't such a distance between my locantion and the majority of user i would have posted some FS ads... but the shipping it's worth more than the parts...

The 2.0 cooler is bigger than the 1.8, so no problem with removing that extra heatsink. You could have left it there, but without it will also just work fine.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

hmmm... i already have an 1.8 cooler... for the last month it runs cool enoug considering the 28 degrees of the surrounding air... aroud 50 - 55 in normal operation and 80 in heavy load (it's a little bit much, i know, but i didn't have any luck finding graphite powder to combine with oil, and lube-ing the original fan...
but anyways - the cooler is in a tottaly different area than the heatsink
i'll try posting some pictures later this evening...
it's the copper thing the one that appears in one picture and doesn't in the other

right now as i have several ie windows open, some explorers and one picture editor open - the T30 is running at 61 degrees

in the time that passed from the last post i've used my T30 for all kinds of applications - the hotter that it gets is around 87 (cpu) when scanning a photo (using an older LPT scanner) - other than that it's working ok
the only thing i didn't get rid of with the casing replacement is an annoying squeak coming from the area of the right hinge (when i move the lid) - thought it came from the old cracket base, but the new one is "perfect" but it still squeaks...

solved the temperature issue - with Arctic Silver 5, and replacing the CPU radiator with the original one (form the original Fan2, now i have the 1.8 fan...)
it went down around 6-7 degrees in full load
the squeak is still present

another thing...
the processor heatsink has on the top side some sort of soft pad - which is depressed aginst the bottom of the keyboard
what might be the purpose? - to dissipate some more heat? to use the metal bottom of the kb as a heatsink? if it is so - some new and fresh thermal pad won't improve the heat transfer? or damage the keyboard from too much heat?
in the picture the pad can be seen - the grey thing
Moderator note: Props for including a PIC warning in your original post but can you reduce the size of this image? It's over 400KB. Recommended size is 50KB. Thanks!
note taken - i'll be away for a couple of weeks - then i'll repost it a little smaller

I have seen these thermally conductive rubber sheets in Tokyo at Akihabara's electronic stores with different thicknesses and not elsewhere. They are in small pieces for top of chips.
