Current X61s have been factory crippled to intentionally prevent input recording from any sources other than the mono-mic.

Why did they do that? Does it apply to the tablet as well?

I don't this this is true. You can get a USB to AV device to record tapes, records...

Unfortunately, it is true .... and the Poll does not ask about using add-on devices as a work-around.

eecon, you have the same poll open in T61 and X61 areas. I am going to point users to your T61 thread and lock this down. I have been following your thread in the T6x area and the issue is the same in both T61/X61.
