T40 Battery Capacity Lost When Charging After Suspend Mode

#1 Post by yskunto » Thu Jul 03, 2008 6:30 am

I've thinkpad T40 D5U Type. I try to recalibrate the battery according to what the battery maximizer tips help. It run down until suspend and I start to charge it. When the lights goes green, I check the battery maximizer and found the capacity lost. I try to calibrate in again, but the more I do calibrate more battery capacity lost I suffer. Know my battery only 2.85mWh from about 16mWh with only 52 cycle. What's wrong? Any body could help me to resolve the problem?

Hello, I think your battery is just too old... could you post here:

1) total cycle count
2) manufactured date
3) first used date
4) projected and current full charge capacity
5) maybe also a battery vendor
X60t - 3GB RAM, 60GB HDD, currently no battery, SXGA+
X61t - 4GB RAM, 120GB SSD, 1 hour battery, SXGA+ with bubbles
T530 - i7-3630QM, 16GB RAM, 240+480GB SSDs, 3G, Full HD LCD, 9 cell battery

Info about the battery

Total Cycle is 52.
I didn't know the manufacture date but battery maximizer said it was first used around June 2004.
Designed full capacity is 47.52Wh but now only current capacity is around 2.50Wh.
I bought this laptop second hand, when it first came (April 2008) it has around 16.00Wh with 40 cycles which is good for around 50 minutes.
The manufacture is Sony.

Last night, I try to recalibrate it by let the battery run down in BIOS untill it is suspend. I charge it over night and it now came to 3.15Wh, but after I try to recalibrate it again, it down to 2.00Wh.

Any solution or diagnostic why this is happen?

This is normal behavior for Li-ion batteries, they last about 2 years for sure, but then, god knows.... There is no way back, you need to buy a new one.

52 cycles should diminish the battery to 16mWh. My guess is that one or more cells are dead. Yup... time for a new battery.

EDITED>>> whoops! I meant to say... "52 cycles shouldn't diminish...<snip>"

Thanks but..., why the capacity only drop if I recharge it in suspend mode? (It start to extreem drop from 16Wh start in June 2008 to 2Wh this day after 12 cycle - 40 to 52 cycle) If I charge it when the T40 shutdown, the capacity is not drop? Any idea?
I want to prevent my next Li-Ion from situation like this.
