Heat issues with X32? IBM Upgraded warranty scam

#1 Post by proaudioguy » Thu Jul 03, 2008 10:25 am

So I just had my system board replaced. I had a 1.8GHz Pm, and they replaced it with a 1.7GHz Pm and I've noticed it's noticeably cooler using MobileMeter. At the lowest clock it's running 8-10 degrees cooler, while at full speed it's not reaching the 80C I was getting before, and it's not shutting down (from overheating) so far, which was the main reason for swapping it out.
I just wondered what the folks with 1.8 and 2GHz machines were reading for operating temps.

On another topic, I happened to look up my warranty and found it was going to expire July 27th 2008. Since I upgraded it on March 31, 2008 for a total of nearly $127. and checked it within a week or so to find it had been extended to 2011, I was in shock when I saw the 2008 expiration date. Anyone have any luck in these cases?

My buddy bought the 9x5 next business day on site warranty plus thinkpad protection (I saw his receipt) , and he had to send in his X60 Tablet and be without it for a month. They have no record of his warranty upgrade. This is the kind of thing that will cause them to lose a lot of business.

Are you reading this Lenovo?

Regarding the warranty extension, it is supposed to hit the system within 10 business days. Give them a call and see what's what, hopefully you've saved the email receipt.

Yea, it says it's been upgraded to 9x5 next business day, but the time period is still up July 27th. I bought an upgrade to a 3 year depot warrantee for an under 4 month time period?!!

It finally hit me...IBM warranty counts from day of the shipment, so what you have done is just an upgrade to 9-5 NBD service without extending the date...warranty for my T43P was extended for two years when I bought a 5-year warranty...hence the low price that you have paid for your upgrade...

How much is it to extend a warranty?

how much did you pay?

For most older machines that I'm aware of (including the aforementioned T43p) upgrading to five-year depot from standard three year is $199.00 + tax. You can do slightly better from web resellers, but have to know the part number for the specific warranty extension.

If it's your opinion that $127. is a low price to upgrade (not extend) a warranty for 4 months on a computer that cost me $525. then you are living in a different world than me.

You're missing my point, either incidentally or on purpose...

My opinion doesn't count and is not a subject matter here...

Let the facts and figures speak for themselves: upgrading warranty to what you've expected to get for $127 is unrealistic. Fact is that upgrading to full (5-year) standard depot is $152 at the cheapest place on the web, and you've gone for 9-5 NBD. That would've run you $250 at least, at a re-seller and $300 or so directly from IBM...

Trust me, I'm not here to rub salt in anyone's wounds. I happen to work for a living like most of us do.

I would have happily done it and thought I had. They said this was the only upgrade available.

Semantics, courtesy of a dumb rep, most likely.

"Upgrade" does not equal "extension" but they should have offered it to you anyway...

My 2 GHz runs at ~47-53 C when at 2 GHz. ~43-50 C when at the 600/800 MHz step range. Ambient temp is ~65 F.

This is running Ubuntu 8.04 without any fancy effects or heavy computational stuff going on; not idling though.

WOW, that is a huge difference.
The IBM authorized service tech that changed the system board said it should be ok up in the 90s or even 100C. I just noticed the other one was shutting down somewhere above the 80C mark. I can't understand how you can get so much better cooling. Part of the problem is the fan barely ever comes on. When it gets real hot, it comes on, otherwise it's barely running if at all.

I'm not completely sure as to how far the burn-in is/what mods have been done on this lappy, as I bought it second hand recently.

The fan, I've noticed, steps up gradually when the CPU temp hits around the 53 C. It has yet to bypass my HDD in its decibel level though.

I just ran the Super PI test on it for 20 permutations, and it jumped from ~46 C to 65 C by the end of the test. It quickly dropped back down to 56 C when stuck at 2 GHz. Currently idling at ~ 47 C after some other stress-tests. The GPU is idling at ~42 C without direct rendering enabled.

Whatever the case, yeah, mine does run a LOT cooler than yours...

If I don't trim my quotes it's because I am intentionally quoting all of it. If I am directing a response to a particular statement, then i trim the quotes to that statement. What the hell is the big deal anyway? I happen to appreciate when I get an email notification of a post on a really old thread and I can quickly catch up (recall what the thread was about) just reading all the quotes on the latest post. If it was TREE view like it's supposed to be, quotes wouldn't even be necessary.

I managed to get mine down to about 50C when stepped to 600MHz. I wonder if your 2GHz is a newer core with lower power consumption.
