I just wonder how did they conclude that... Smells like marketing....A computer with two of the 5TB drives is estimated to hold roughly as much information as a typical human brain and would permit computers to have a similar level of memory recall.

Well, according to this, it seems that SSD will have problems to replace classic drives....
even then you still gotta remember not everyone needs 500GB on a laptop. I actually have 100GB and still have about 50GB free and i have lots of TV shows and music on here. Granted i have an external drive but that's the main point, with a 1TB network drive (or even those "cloud" storage places) you don't need to store 100s of GBs on data locally. I like to share my music and shows between devices so they are centrally stored.

I agree with you, no need to store all that locally, but applications/games and TVshows/movies (if HD encoded) are getting bigger and bigger...
I remember some years back when 80GB drives were introduced, and there were some people that claimed that there is no need for those (for personal use, of course)....
