ACPI Thermal Question

#1 Post by Harryc » Fri Jul 04, 2008 5:38 am

Question on the below from an OpenSUSE 11.0 install on an R50/P. Does the GPU trip a shutdown at 94*C or just the CPU? Any other thermal sensors involved? In other words, what sensors have to reach 94*C before the machine shuts down?

harryc@linux-9rhe:~> cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM0/trip_points
critical (S5): 94 C
passive: 92 C: tc1=8 tc2=5 tsp=600 devices= CPU

On my T42 the GPU did trip a shutdown at 90+ C. I was getting shutdowns while watching Flash videos. Installed Kima and monitored temps until shutdown. I also checked this in Windows with NHC. Turned out I needed a new fan assembly.

GomJabbar, thanks, Well this presents a dilema. The R50/P shuts down after a few minutes of a simple 3D game in Linux, nothing extremely GPU intensive. The dilema is that on an R50/P there is no active GPU cooling, just a heatsink (passive cooling) over the GPU. I am open to suggestions.

Too many miles, too many machines :). Apparently I have been here before - See this link.
