T30 won't wake up, sleep issues

#1 Post by hare » Fri Jul 04, 2008 11:06 pm

My T30 has a problem, it will not wake back up. Here is a detailed description of the problem. Starting from the of state where it has been off for a while.

turn on and boot in XP. No problems yet. Put to sleep by closing lid. Once a sleep, open lid. I can hear the HD spin up, the sleep light goes out, and the power light turns on. That is it, no other signs of life. If i hold the power button down, it will turn off. Turning it back on at this point will spin up the HD, turn the cpu fan on, flash the indicator lights and leave the power light on. However, the screen does not come on and the machine does not boot.

if i leave it for a while unplugged, a few minutes should do, then i press the power button. it will boot normally. I believe that if i put it to sleep, and let it sleep a while, it will wake up correctly.

I think this is a hardware issue. I would guess that something is not soldered well and holding a charge when it should not, but after having time to rest it slowly discharges and will boot again.

only other important thing i can think of to say at this point is that this MB did have the ram slot issue. I re-soldered it and it started to recognize both slots again. I am going to have another close look at the slots, but if anyone out there has experience with this symptom, please let me know what you think.

Before you 'put it to sleep', you should close any connections to the internet.
That's what holds the laptop back when it 'wakes up'.

I have a T21 (yeah, I know you're talking about a T30) running WinXP Pro SP3 that I hibernate (put to sleep) by closing and opening the lid all the time, with no problem. With all due respect to RBS's reply, I've never had to first close my internet connection. I always close all open programs like IE7, OE6, MS Office apps, etc., before closing the lid at night. In the morning, I just open the lid and WinXP comes back to the user login screen. Maybe I've just been lucky.

You're not the first to experience this problem. Here are a couple of links I found that may help. The problem can be related to the power management feature, but seems to have many causes.

thanks for the links.

i have done more testing to the machine and am convinced that it is not a software issue.

for example, if i press down on the upper left corner of the GPU when i am waking it up, it works just fine. I can repeat this as many times as i like, but if i do not put pressure on the chip, it will not wake up.

so, at this point, i think it is obvious that one of the balls on the GPU
has come un-soldered.

It is a bit surprising to me that the GPU is the problem here, i honestly figured it would be related to a bad solder joint in the PM circuits.

That's an interesting discovery. It sounds like you do need to start investigating broken solder joints.

Let us know how it turns out!

Could also be that the micro-switch under the lid got stuck. Work on that a bit, to see if you can 'loosen it up'.

the switch is fine.
with ample use of flux on the back of the board under the GPU, i heated up all the vias under the corner i spoke of. So far it seems to be working.

last night i put in the diag disk from lenovo. When i did a battery of video chip tests, a strange thing happened. While it passed all tests, as the chip warmed up, the video got staticky and started to blank out. This is when i found that pushing on the corner made it come back.

so, now i am repeating the battery to see if it happens again.

it survived 10 iterations of the gpu test with no problem. I reassembled the whole thing and it is waking up now.

Hopefully this will last. but atleast i know where the problem is if it
starts to happen again.

Great job diagnosing and fixing the problem :!:

Maybe others can benefit from your experience.
