Looking to upgrade my T40 - some questions...

#1 Post by brundlefly76 » Sun Dec 19, 2004 11:56 pm

I have a T40 with Pentium M 1.5 GHz and Cisco PCI 802.11b.

I have had it for over a year, and am looking at doing some upgrades, and have some questions for more knowledgable T40 owners.

1. Hard Drive upgrade - I want to get a 7200 RPM hard drive. Whats the best migration method?

2. Wireless - which is the best mini-PCI card which will work with my T40? Where can I get it at a good price?

Did you mean to say you have a Cisco MiniPCI adapter?

Why not just stick with that one? (Do you really need 802.11g capabilities?...usually, if you have DSL or a cable modem, the speed you get is less than the maximum bandwidth of the 802.11b spec...)

For imaging directly, one thing you can do is get a $45 (list price) second drive tray for your T40...IBM part number 62P4554. Remove the optical drive temporarily, and you could use something like ghost (remember to use the -ib parameter with ghost) to transfer the image directly to the other drive.

Then you can use both drives...one as a primary, one as a backup device, on occasion. If you use the IBM Rescue and Recovery program (a GREAT program), you can specify your backup image to be sent to the primary AND secondary drive.

A great way to use your "leftover" drive.

why not just transfer all the files over to your desktop via Gigabit ethernet. it should take less than 1 hour.

I use Remote Desktop to other computers on the LAN frequently, and now am transferring larger video files.

Now, back to my question...?[/quote]

then upgrade to the 2nd gen IBM a/b/g WiFi card. I have it on the newer T42. Simple, no fuss.
