screen broken?

#1 Post by wolfy365 » Sun Jul 06, 2008 7:02 am

Its not cracked, its just it stays black, while the rest of the computer turns on.
my computer had some issues with the right screen hinge being broken, so the help desk at our school fixed it, but then the screen started flickering, and a black area appeared in the lower left hand portion of the screen, it got extremeley hot so i had to shut off the computer.
Now the screen doesnt turn on at all.
I bought the computer through my school in 2005, and since then not had any problem up till now, i was wondering if i needed to get an entirely new screen all together.

Seems the backlight got shorted and failed. May be due to the hinge repair not properly done.

What is the type and model numbers of the machine?

This is a 14 inch R51. There are no known weakness in the screen design. Likelyhood is still the recent repair job.

It will be hard to tell until it is opened and examined.

I assume your R51 is out of warranty. If so, and if you don't feel comfortable opening it up yourself, I suggest you take it back to the people who "fixed" it (the ironically named "help desk"). Tell them you think its current problem is a result of their repair.

I'm not familiar with repair places in your area; perhaps another forum member near you can advise. Forum member jamiphar (James) does many types of ThinkPad repairs. I have never used his services but many others here have and report satisfaction. Search in the Marketplace or send a PM. Best of luck!
