recommendations for canned air?
What brand of canned air do you use? (does it really matter?) and where do you buy it reasonably cheap (one or two 10 - 12 oz cans)? (I'm not looking to buy it in bulk to get a discount
)

consider a rocket blower instead. i have one for my camera and it serves double-duty on keyboards when needed. there are no negative environmental impacts, it never runs out of air, and it'll save you money in the end.

Seems like phpBB has a problem with quoting an asterisk. If you replace it with the HTML version, "&43;", then it will quote properly.GomJabbar wrote:[I wonder why your link did not show up as a link in the quote? I subsequently edited out the url. I do not have BBCode disabled.]

Interesting alternative. I'll think about it. thx.erik wrote:consider a rocket blower instead. i have one for my camera and it serves double-duty on keyboards when needed. there are no negative environmental impacts, it never runs out of air, and it'll save you money in the end.

Just to think outside the proverbial box a little, and I've posted this before: why pay for canned air (or here, canned smog)?
I just use my electric leaf blower. I had previously gotten comments that the rather impressive air blast could theoretically cause static discharge problems with sensitive components, but never have observed it in practice. For something relatively small and delicate such as our laptops, just stand back a little.
It is a spectacularly effective way to clean one's desktop machine every year or two.

Thinking along Art's line, why not take the heating elements out of an old hair dryer (or switch it to cold if there is an option for that), and make a DIY funnel?

It should go without saying that you remove the keyboard first, before you clean it!wearetheborg wrote:For cleaning laptops, arent you guys worried about the dust getting inside the laptop if blowing air ? Would a small vaccum cleaner not be better ?

I like the air blower type cleaners from erik's original post because they direct much more precise blasts than hair dryers and the like.
I first realized the usefulness of these when a service man with 40+ years experience came into our lab to service some larger bright field and fluorescence scopes. First blast the larger debris, such as big dust specs, off the optics, then clean, then do a final blast. What does he use to clean the lenses, objectives, and filters? I quote: "One hundred percent pure ether, anesthetic grade. I've been doing this for 47 years, and the stuff's never bothered me."
The canned stuff just doesn't cut it. But based on how clean our scopes are now a rocket blower is good enough for me.

ok, we're making light of a real question..
sorry..
for me, i use the central vac system and an upholstry tool or sometime a brush tool..
not wanting to lift the keytops off
which it could do if i was careless..
i like to keep things simple..
the vac system i have, canned air would take a trip to a computer shop or an online order..

I second that! - a guy came by with a damaged T42 the other day. He had tried to blow the dust out using a compressor. He clean stripped off all the fan blades!! It had a real hard time cooling the cpu afterwardscarbon_unit wrote:Me too, but very carefully.Dimitri_P wrote:I use air compressor
