Proper keyboard layout

#1 Post by old_timer » Mon Jul 07, 2008 11:51 am

Hello eveyone,

I recently acquired an used T43 notebook and I'm facing a somewhat serious problem, since I reinstalled the notebook with a fresh windows xp professional copy, licensed by my company. Windows doesn't recognizes the keyboard properly and sets it up as a "standard 101/102 natural keyboard". The result of this is that, no matter the language I select, the slash/question mark key is recognized as a "right CTRL".

Already tried switching languages and layouts, it seems like a driver issue to me. I don't have the recovery disks and I wonder if there is an exclusive keyboard driver included there, because I couldn't find any in the lenovo website.

Thanks for reading so far :D

a quick question..
is there a language difference between the vista install and the keyboard..
i.e. is it a Portuguese version of vista and an english keyboard..?
or vice-versa..?

FWIW, on my T60p with vista ultimate and only a few of the lenovo/ibm drivers loaded, it works well, keyboard language and all..
in english..
and it is using the standard 101 key driver like yours..

have you tried this keyboard customizer..?

its all in english though.. :)

Hi

actually I installed everything and saw the problem at some point... I'm starting to think that something from lenovo is causing the problem, and the keyboard customizer is my first suspect

I'll probably try another fresh windows install as soon as I have time
this problem is really making me crazy because I need the question mark and the slash to code (I'm a software developer) and so far I couldn't use the notebook for this purpose

The strange thing about this problem is that I still couldn't find anyone else with the same problem so far o.O

Ok, now I'm really lost. I just did a full format of the thinkpad's HD and the problem is there, right from the start. The slash/question mark key is a CTRL. Gee...

Try a different KB. Doesn't even have to be a T4x KB. May be your KB is just defective.

on a thinkpad the "?/" key is just above the right side ctrl key..
i am thinking that this might be hardware..
a defective keyboard..

if you have an external USB keyboard, try that..

anotherr interesting thought: what is the right side CTRL key recognised as..?

If all else fails, you could use KeyTweak to tweak the keys to do what you want.

Sorry I took so much time to answer. Had some tough times with university finals and a lot of work in my company.

Well, the keyboard is not defective - it works perfectly in linux. Right know I'm using Ubuntu and it's looking very good. Its free and it comes with the perfect driver for the keyboard (THINKPAD is the name of the driver, btw). Amazing, for something you don't even have to pay for. Things just shouldn't be like this.

I'm considering seriously to keep ubuntu in my T43, since I'm doing everything fine with it, but I would be happy to have a proper windows install also later, when I upgrade the hard disk.

Oh, and there is no right side ctrl key :)

Then it's a non-standard keyboard, and you probably need to change the layout in Windows to match the keyboard.

Tried several layouts. None seems to be the right one...
there is a "ç" key in my keyboard. I'm talking from Brazil, btw... my keyboards like this one seem pretty much standard from the DRIVER point of view, since I never had any similar problems with other keyboards and their layouts.

I should have thought of that, though... this issue is pretty weird for most of you guys to understand, because the standard keyboard driver should work fine if you are using an american/english keyboard :\

Another strange thing to notice is that this doesn't seems to be a layout issue in linux. You see, when I install ubuntu I *have* to choose the specific THINKPAD driver, otherwise I see the same effect I had with windows.

Sorry about my english. I drunk a couple of beer bottles moments ago. :D

Hello folks,

Installed VISTA in my T43. Still no luck at all. Same problem. The "/?" key is recognized as a right ctrl. :'(
