X31 Atheros wireless card range

#1 Post by jtt3011 » Tue Jul 08, 2008 12:35 pm

My X31 has the Atheros wireless card offering both 11b and 11g cover. On the other hand, my Netgear router is an ancient 11b only unit, which has always worked faultlessly. However, connection range between the two is not so good _ certainly not as good as that to my alternative A22M (wireless card model not known without heaving it out of the cupboard and firing it up). And another X31, using the Intel wireless adaptor, gives similar range to that achieved with the Atheros.

So, does anyone know if I would be likely to get any increase in connection range if I replaced my router with an 11g model.

I am not looking for OTH performance: the router is located with my desktop in the loft office of a bungalow, and I want to connect the laptop from a table in the garden, about, say, 25-30 metres away. There is one double brick wall, and the corner of a wooden shed, in between, and that's all. The A22m performs this feat without complaint.

You won't get a better range with g, only an increase of bandwith when in good conditions.
I think b is even better than g for range of operations.

N is better because it uses mimo so you might consider upgrading but I don't know if there is enough room for all the antennas needed in the old x thinkpads.
