Converting USB1.1 to USB2.0 ?
Converting USB1.1 to USB2.0 ?
Is there some quick and dirty way to achieve USB 2.0 speeds with the single USB1.1 output jack I have on my T-21 /2647 ?
I found a PCMCIA cardbus adapter on ebay but can't be sure if it actually converts or just acts as a hub @1.1 speeds ?
Thanx,
Raydeo

It is generally thought that it is not possible (especially, an "easy" way) to convert the existing USB jack(s) in the T2x systems. By that I mean to have USB 2.0 capability coming out of the laptop's built-in jack(s).
You can certainly use a PCMCIA-to-USB 2.0 adapter but that means you will be using that card's dongle or jack. Most cards will have two USB 2.0 jacks so if that's not enough, you can plug in a hub. Be aware however, that most adapters will need an external power supply if you are attaching something like an external hard drive.

Thanx Ray and Madkat :
I''m looking at a Belkin unit on ebay that looks like it'll do the job:
Has 2 ports and an outboard power supply.
FWIW: in my travels looking at these cardbus devices, I wasn't sure if they actually converted the speed to 2.0, or just acted like a hub and merely provided "more of the same"
Thanx again,
Raydeo

I've used a Belkin USB2.0 PCMCIA card for a long time and it works great (see my sig). Either port transfers data at USB2.0 speed.

Any idea why my newly acquired USB 2.0 (NEC chipset) card causes a shutdown of XP when I attach my WD drive? Is it the power issue? I have two external drives; the Wolverine is a 40MB drive and has a power cable but the WD requires some special cable that I don't have (but can apparently order).
Any idea if this is why XP blows when I connect the drive? The slot is good - I'm running wireless right now (and have been for ages) off a PCMCIA Belkin wifi card.

T30 2366-61U dead mobo
T30 2366-81U still works but not being currently used. I think I'll rectify that situation.
T40 2373-19U dead
(2) T42 2373-JXU with Flexview LCDs. One with either GPU or southbridge issue.
T43 2687-D4U with possible software problem. Awaiting R&Rs.

What do you mean by "shutdown of XP?" Does it just power off, give you a BSOD, any error messages, or what? What brand/model is the USB2.0 card?
Did you load any software drivers? Have you checked the manufacturer's website to see if there are updated drivers?
I routinely run my Netgear wireless card in the bottom slot and the Belkin USB2.0 card in the top slot. With the external power adapter connected I have connected my Hitachi 60GB HDD inside an Adaptec HDD enclosure and accessed it with no problem.

the shutdown is a power issue
the ext hdd draws too much power from the USB (i dont think that it requires more than 500mA but the adapter doesn't provide this current) - i've experienced it with an internal cardreader "converted" to external - on my desktop works fine, on the pcmcia usb adapter causes shutdown (on the label it said 500mA requirement)

Did your USB2.0 PCMCIA card come with an external power supply? My Belkin did. If not, then yes, you need a special "Y" type USB cable. I have one for a different device. It has a shorter lead that you plug into the USB1.1 internal port that is powered.
