X31 - Too hot for lap ?

#1 Post by GpsPasSion » Mon Dec 20, 2004 7:39 pm

Happily upgraded to an X31 from my old beat Sony Z505 a couple of weeks ago, and I'm finding it increasingly difficult to use it for long periods of time on my lap as it quickly gets too hot for comfort. I'm running it at 600mhz most of the time and the temp is between 45 and 50 celsius so that's not too bad.

Anyone else noticed that ? Any tricks to overcome this rather annoying problem on a...laptop ? The Z505 and it's PIII running at 600mhz was OK for that even though the fan came on pretty often (it never does on the X31).

Anyone know of a "lap" laptop cooler ?

You sure the fan is coming on? You could try aluminum tape on the hot-spots.

Anyway, laptops on your lap are bad for sperm count 8)

Right ;-)
Actually it's mostly my right thigh feeling the heat and no the fan isn't coming on normally (only at 65+ degrees celsius in my experience). I've been searching the web for laptop coolers, nothing I've come across seems to be desgined for LAPtop use yet...

You think duct tape could come in handy ? That's a thought although it might make things a bit gooey after a while...

I wonder whether the X3 base would help at allthough I suspect it might add a bit too much height for comfortable typing.

Are you using it while it's plugged in?

Or are you running on battery?

Plugged in but with adaptive CPU settings so it's running at 600mhz pretty much all the time.

I guess not too many people work all day with their laptop on their...lap :o Maybe I should just give up my couch and get back to my desk  The burning right thigh sensation seems to be getting worse so I must have developed some kind of sensitivity in that area now !

Get the extended life battery and unplug that puppy!

It's the internal charger that's giving you hot thighs.

(Never thought I'd say that to a guy!)

Really ? That's certainly worth trying, but I seem to be losing some backlighting when I unplug even with the maximum setting, I'll see if I can fix that. Also everything seems to be hot in there, HD area, CPU area, etc...it is in contact with my thigh of course...

I thought there was only one battery for the X31, is there an more powerful OEM one maybe ?

Ah yes, sorry I banked out on this one, yes seems that it could help isolate my thigh from that darn heat !

Ah at last someone who "laptops" for extended amounts of time ;-) From the coutch too ? :)
How do you deal with the heat, does it not get uncomfortable after a couple of hours ? Even in the morning my right thigh "remembers" the heat so this is telling me I need to do something about it ! The kitchen wooden plank isn't up to the job ;-)

I use a lap pad from these folks to protect my lap from my T42p. I game with it on my lap without any heat problems. I don't know how well they dissipate the heat but my lap has no complaints: http://laplogic.com/current/html/home.html

Thanks, this seems to be exactly what I need!
What version are you using? Traveller or Guardian ? I don't move it around that much, so Guardian might be fine given the slightly better performance.

Found a nice review (as always on the gadgeteer I might add ;-)) here http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/laplogic-l ... eview.html

Looks like the Mystral offers good size/price/performance.

And although not specified in their FAQ, they do ship outside the US.

i use mine on the couch all the time, tv and a laptop  it gets hot when it charges or after the battery has ran for a while.

as far at burns, you need some tougher skin  but it does get bothersome at points.

my g4 12inch powerbook got much much hotter, my right palm is a little warm from the faster hard drive

i think my old t22 got much hotter if i recall/

but i really dont care, i will never give this thinkpad up!

Sorry, no. What model do you have and does it have the 4 cell or the 6 cell battery?
