I'm not sure - I seem to recall it may work only with IBM's reinstall/restore discs.

The service pack doesn't matter. However, there are still different XP disks, for example a retail disk from a boxed XP will probably not work with the sticker's key, at all (it won't let you complete the install). I usually use OEM cds that come from other computers, as long as it's xp pro it will work one way or another (sometimes it just works, sometimes you have call MS up to activate).

rook,
Here is a source for T40 restore disks. About the key on the bottom of the ThinkPad, I have read in threads here that it can be used with an OEM disk of the same operating system that the ThinkPad originally had (say, for a clean install without IBM/Lenovo software). It is not needed for the installed OS nor used with restore disks. Any retail version of any OS will come with its own key. Try searching if you want more details. It seems that any other use of the included key is controversial to the members of this forum.
