eBay requires verified PayPal account ???

#1 Post by robert213 » Sun Jul 13, 2008 9:46 am

I am in the process of cleaning out my mother's home.

Selling in central Indiana...

I plan to get rid of stuff by using newspaper ads, antique weekly, trader paper, and craig's list...

Selling nationally...

I created an eBay store...
http://stores.ebay.com/aristique

I was happily adding items to sell on eBay, when all of a sudden I received an error message on the tenth listing. eBay requires the seller to have a verified PayPal account when selling more than 9 items.

What should I do? Assuming that there is no other way around this verified PayPal account requirement...

1) Apply for a PayPal Plus Mastercard and link to my existing PayPal account???

2) Link my existing checking account from my local bank to my PayPal account???

3) Create a new checking account from my local bank and link to my PayPal account???

4) Any other thoughts???

You can get a verified PayPal account without linking any personal banking account by applying for the PayPal credit card (CC). I don't believe that there are any yearly fees, but check the fine print. You don't have to use the card once you get it. If you don't want another CC, then you can apply for the PayPal Buyer's Credit (don't know how that works).

If neither one of those methods appeal to you, then you are left with linking a personal banking account. It's up to you if you want to create a new checking account just for your eBay/PayPal activities. Either way, you basically verify ownership of the bank account by confirming a small deposit made by PayPal into your account.

Another thing to consider is if you foresee yourself accepting more than $500 per month or allowing the use of CC payments, then you are talking about a Business or Premier PayPal account. That basically means that every purchase made by your buyers will be subject to a 2-3% transaction fee. Personal PayPal accounts do not have a transaction fee for non-CC payments but they do have the $500 monthly limit. Personal accounts can accept CC payments but there's a yearly limit to those types of payments (5 per year) and each one will incur a 5% transaction fee.
