570 Harddrive woes (lots of woes on this 570) *PIC*

#1 Post by blackmag+c » Sun Jul 13, 2008 11:47 am

So, the story goes that I bought a 570 off ebay.

It didnt have a cd drive and so I bought an ultrabase and then a cd drive. The cd drive turned out to be uncompatible and so I broke the pins trying to get it in. It was compatible with A20's or something I later found out so no surprises why it wouldnt fit.

SO, i decided to get the hard drive department up to speed. I bought a hard drive. 30 gb ibm hdd - 5 pound, and a caddy, with the intention of putting linux on it through a 3.5 to 2.5 adapter inside my desktop.

THE PROBLEM

Is that the caddy doesnt seem to fit along with the plastic frontage it came with. What gives with that. I have had nothing but trouble to be quite honest. help me please.

to get the drive to fit, you need the right caddy. The 570 series uses an UltraSlimBay drive, the A series uses an Ultrabay 2000 if im not mistaken. Most cd drives will fit if you use the right caddy. One from a 600 series with the bottom bezel plate removed will work. As far as the hard drive caddy. the caddy itself is a piece of metal which the drive fits on to. It shouldn't have a pull tab on the end for a 570. My 570e doesn't even have a caddy at the moment and it fits fine. all you need to do assuming you have all the right pieces is to put the hard drive into the caddy, put the 4 screws in and snap the cover over the back of the hard drive. I hope this fixes your problems.

You might want to post the FRU of the hard drive cover and caddy. That or a picture of the parts. It may be that the parts you received are not compatible with the 570.

it was listed as a 570/570e hard drive caddy/cover/screws.

Basically Im having trouble 'snapping the cover on' and so, the hard drive + caddy + cover isnt flush (the cover sticks out cus its not snapped on properly)

can anyone help this. :?:

That looks like the right caddy and cover. When the drive is installed in the caddy and the cover attached, it should look like this:

Notice that two of the screws actually hold the plastic hard drive cover to the caddy and drive. After the assembly is put together, you should not be able to remove any of the three components without removing the screws.

If you already have your drive, caddy, and cover assembled properly, then your problem might be that caddy is catching somewhere when you insert it into the computer. The most common problem for me is the bottom edge right under the hard drive pins. Sometimes it works better if I GENTLY bend it a little.

Hope this info helps. Let us know if you get the problem fixed.
